2012 750 Li drive shaft failure
I have the U bolts break loose on the drive shaft damaging the exhaust system and putting a hole in the floor on the passenger side floor on my vehicle. Right now damages are in excess of $15000. The NHTSA was notified of this and I am now on week 6 waiting for BMW to decide what to do with vehicle

So yours broke at the rubber shock collar at the point where it attaches to the transfer case?
So is this a different failure to the shorter driveshaft, from the one that attaches to the front wheels. What year and mileage was yours? Wondering if I should replace my rubber collar ring. |

Someone in our aftermarket suppliers needs to make one of these for our e70s !
They would be a hit. I think perhaps I may make one just to be on the safe side should one fail. Best insurance ever. |

After watching a video of a Ford Lightning blow a driveshaft, which in turn blew his airbags as well, I've got a driveshaft safety loop on my Harley Davidson F150 for this very reason. I don't remember enough of what the bottom side of our E70's look like to pull this off but it can't be that hard.

I've read random stories about these driveshaft, but I don't recall anything specific as to why there was a date range where these failed. Was this BMW's attempt to save a few bucks, went with a different supplier and then found out said supplier sucked? This could be the corporate version of them trying to save a buck and ultimately costing them far more by being cheap. I work for a small mom and pop airplane company here in Everett, WA that tried the same thing with their parts suppliers and now every other program is basically funding us until they can recoup their failed attempts.

that will be awesome, do you think we need it at both end ? I'm not sure where it pops from (TC side or the front axle )

Editing this post, don't just rely on the below Campaign. As per the BMW service bulletin this affects 2011, 2012, and 2013. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...58973-1093.pdf
RECALL Subject : Front Driveshaft Universal Joint may Fail Report Receipt Date: MAY 17, 2016 NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V311000 Component(s): POWER TRAIN Potential Number of Units Affected: 21,493 Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC SUMMARY: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2011 X5 xDrive 35i, xDrive50i, X5 M, X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i, and X6 M vehicles manufactured April 5, 2010, to November 20, 2010, 2011 X5 xDrive35d diesel vehicles manufactured April 7, 2010, to November 20, 2010, and 2011 X6 Active Hybrid vehicles manufactured April 15, 2010, to November 17, 2010. The affected vehicles have a front driveshaft universal joint that may not seal out water and debris from getting in and damaging the joint, which could lead to its failure. CONSEQUENCE: If the front universal joint fails, the front wheels would not be driven, affecting vehicle traction. Additionally, continued driving of the vehicle with a broken front universal joint may damage other components. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash. REMEDY: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driveshaft, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on July 1, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Doesn't mount to a hill of beans of their all prone to failure. If yours does brake it may take out everything like some owners here needing all new drive train, or like mine which was just superficial, but whatever the cause seems like all x5 may have an issue. They should have bit the bullet and replaced them all. |

You don't want to risk waiting to see if it goes as the damage could be catastrophic. But that's just me. . While i was in their replacing my transfer case I also replaced the rubber shock insulator on the rear drive shaft as they do get crispy from heat. With the amount of torque these cars have I want to be on the side of caution |

I'm back...
Couple months and a few miles after the driveshaft failure and subsequent massively expensive repair, the newly replaced transmission just grenaded itself while driving through a school zone at low speed. BMW is covering the replacement in full despite now being out of warranty... Can't speak higher about that level of customer service... Can't speak lower about the amount of problems this vehicle has had. At this point, BMW warranty has shelled out so much money fixing my X5 50i that I could have bought a new one. Love the vehicle, love driving it, shocked that it's the least reliable vehicle I've ever owned. |

2012 BMW X5 35i FRONT DRIVE SHAFT BROKEN AND HAS CAUSED DAMAGE
Fellas, I need help and direction on this one here. So my wife was driving our 2012 BWM X5 and called me that she's suddenly hearing some unusual noise, I had her pull to the side of the road, went over and lo and behold all the oil in the truck was oozing out of the vehicle. I bent down yet couldn't see anything broken.
I later found out that it was the drive shaft that was broken, since I bought the car from Carmax and it was covered under a 5 year warranty I towed it there and left a note in the truck as their service center was closed that no one should start it as there's no oil in the truck. The service consultant (SC) told me that they need to replace not just the shaft but the oil pan. Upon taking the oil pan they discovered METAL SHAVINGS in the oil pan. METAL SHAVINGS???? YES! METAL SHAVINGS! How in the world is there metal shavings in the pan? Well, they called to tell me that it looks like there may be some more damage to the extent that the engine may probably need replacement. OH MY! Fellas I need help on this, first of all, the drive shaft caused the problem. My car has almost 55000 miles. Does BMW cover this shaft problems? Or I should just have Carmax work on it? Am just confused, I know Dawgman had a similar issue, is there anyway I could go about this? |

Thanks alot bmwx5er, I will do that this week.
Is there any recall document from BMW that you're aware of for this? I figured if I have some kind of documentation it may make my request more authentic. May be not..but I thought I'd ask. Last edited by okyereis; 11-15-2016 at 09:50 AM.. Reason: needed to added a question |
