Used to be a lady (Mrs. Rawls) that lived in Malibu, right under where we turned airplanes north. She called on a regular basis and was quite annoying. She called one night complaining that we put 9 airplanes in a row right over her house. The sup that took the call told her that she should be very happy that our controllers were so talented that we could put 9 airplanes in a row right over her house!! She didn't call back for quite some time!

Oh yeah! You’re a rookie for the first few years minimum. I didn’t even feel lightly seasoned until about year 8.

R.I.P. to that Alhambra officer. That municipality is just to the northwest of my patrol area.

Are home ankle monitors removable by the person being monitored?

There was a call for a domestic on that TV show last weekend, and a woman was retrieving her essentials to vacate a residence for the night. One of the items that she needed was the charger for her ankle monitor, which the woman over-shared was allegedly her boyfriend's way of tracking her and she was not under house arrest or on probation/parole. (He apparently did not live at the address where the domestic was taking place, and was not at the scene.) It seemed strange to me. Is there a way that she could be wearing his court-ordered ankle monitor for him while he runs around free and un-tracked? If so, how common of an occurrence is it?????

If the ankle monitor is removed, it triggers an alert that notifies the probation/parole agencies. The local law enforcement agency responsible for the jurisdiction the individual resides in is notified as well.

So, there's no provision to briefly remove it when showering, swimming, etc that could be exploited to quickly put it on someone else's leg? Does the anti-removal alarm trigger when the strap is cut/opened, or does it (also?) have a heartbeat sensor like an Apple Watch and similar fitness devices?

Just curious how they work, because that woman's explanation for voluntarily wearing one didn't seem plausible.....

I believe it’s waterproof to a point; full submersion is to be avoided. As soon as the strap is cut it triggers the alert. We get calls occasionally from probation or parole when it occurs. They ask us to check the location and provide a decsription of the individual; that person’s probation/parole is violated. It’s a closed loop kind of device. If that loop is compromised, it triggers the alert.

Funny enough, on my trips back home to Nevada after my work week in California, I’ve come across cut ankle monitors in the desert while peeing. lol!

Do you ever actually pull someone over just because of their window tint?

Watch an episode of On Patrol: Live on TV to see how many traffic stops are initiated because of dark tint and escalate to arrests for something else. Window tint is easy probable cause to yank a vehicle and start a fishing expedition for something bigger.

I used to have a co-worker that had illegal dark tint on his car, and complained about racial profiling because he was yanked at least 1-2 times per month for his tint. The tint was so dark that an officer couldn't even see the vehicle's occupants, so how could they profile him? I asked him the dumb question about why he didn't just remove the tint, and he said that his car looked too good with the tint on. I told him that I was calling his car "Probable Cause" from that point on. I also advised co-workers to avoid riding with him, unless they liked having guns pointed at them during felony traffic stops because the officers can't see the vehicle occupants and take everyone out at gunpoint for officer safety.....

Safe advice! Let’s hope they listened because you’re 100% correct.

Let me solicit another opinion about my DW's driving habits when we are on long road trips. I tell her that she already has one strike against her because our vehicles have NY State license plates, and another strike if she's loitering for more than 30 seconds in any of the passing lanes on the Interstates without visibly and decisively making a pass. God forbid she sees a police car, because she JAMS on the brakes and slows down to 10-15 MPH below the speed limit...which she wasn't exceeding in the first place...and that's strike three for suspicious driving. Am I nuts?????

Well, I’m sure you have reasons for #1 and #2. As for #3, it’s not unusual for a motorist to hit the brakes when they see law enforcement on the road or running speed from a stationary position.

I get a kick out of all the people who slow down when a LEO is at the side of the road, OUT OF HIS CAR doing business; like he's going to stop what he's doing, get in his car and chase them down. My wife likes to tell me I need to slow down (like I'm the "rabbit") when passing a LEO doing business. I figure I usually have a good 20 miles before I need to be concerned about my speed; although I like to keep it at (usually ) no more than 9 over.

I always maintain whatever speed I'm doing or slow gradually. I figure either he already has me on radar or I'm good.

I usually slow and move over a lane if possible, to give them some safety room (and to hopefully alert the idiots behind me to do the same). Even if it is just writing a traffic ticket the LEO may be wanting a little more space; if it is something more than that then there may be a lot of action it is good to avoid.

That’s a good practice. Truckers often employ a similar practice for other truckers too.

California isn't a mandatory move-over law state yet for stopped emergency vehicles?????
