Do you have more pictures of how it looks from behind, and where did you get it? I was going to get an OEM hitch but I am not a fan of cutting the bumper.

Have y'all considered that most trailers require a certain height for the ball? If you mount too low, you will need a pretty serious step-up hitch. I had to put a 3" riser with the OEM. If the hitch is under the bumper, you'd need something like an 8" riser.....

Hey Sylvan Lake I ordered the curt hitch from Canadian Hitch.ca $235. I also ordered a wireless brake control from Hitch direct for $110 .

Hey jml I had to put a 4" riser and my ball height sits at 18 1/2" to the top of ball. Most recommendations for height are 18" to 20"

Here are the part number listed that I've found on xoutpost Trailer Hitch Kit (PN: 71 60 2 156 525) Trim Piece Kit X5M (PN: 71 60 2 185 556) Blind rivet (Qty 8) (PN: 07 14 9 140 786) The trim piece is the black one that hides the cut in the bumper. Here are 2 more pictures of the OEM setup with the cut bumper and 1 more without the OEM install |

I recently (April) purchased a 2010 X5M and it has a tow hitch that I haven't seen anyone mention before (unless I missed it, which is entirely possible!). It's an OEM hitch from BMW and comes with a multi-language instruction booklet that describes it as an "electrically pivoting tow bar". It's hidden under the rear bumper/fender cover when not in use. When you need it, it is activated by a button hidden under the left boot/trunk cover. This swings it out from under the fender and into position where it locks. The same button swings it back under the fender. It takes about 4-5 seconds to swing out & in. There are a couple of numbers on the back of the booklet (6 850 746 and 0102.1180.503/00). I'm not sure if these are part numbers for the booklet or the hitch - I can't seem to find them anywhere on the internet. Unfortunately there's no other mention of part numbers, and no information on towing capacity etc. I've attached some photos showing it hidden and deployed, and a couple of videos showing how it works. Edit: I think I found some part numbers: 71 60 6 797 519 (tow coupling) 0102.0980.915 (screw set consisting of 8 pieces) 0102.1180.900 (Contents: Manual & Info) Diagram here: https://www.bmwautodalys.lt/en/catal...203/R/A/2011/0 Last edited by KeithOwen; 07-12-2014 at 06:06 AM.. |

I just got an Execuhitch installed in my 2012 X5D. OEM harness; OEM coding; no cutting of the bumper. Rated for 7700lbs (*Europe Rating) as this hitch is the OEM hitch used in all the countries used outside of NA. The OEM hitch in NA is rated at 6000lbs and is of lesser quality AND you have to cut the bumper.
Looking forward to towing with it! |

We have this thing called vehicle safety regulations. Some of the strictest in the world. a tow rating is not a hard fast rule. Your EU vs US rating numbers are crap, and nothing more than differences in rules/regulations. Either way, both accomplish the same exact task, and both have proven themselves in various circumstances. |

I don't know a lot about the Euro one except that the towing capacity is higher because of dynamic load testing. As for the hitch for an X5 and X5M, there's a small difference in the height of the hitch beam with the Execuhitch There's an interesting thread on bimmerfest. Here's a quote from the guy from http://execuhitch.com/tow-hitches/bmw-x5-and-x5m/ (aka invisihitch.com) Quote:

Is there a DIY for the Execuhitch?
If you install Execuhitch with OEM harness, is coding required at the dealer? |

Yes, execuhitch sends you the DIY. And yes there is coding required which Execuhitch can do now through a third party vendor which is included in the price of the hitch. |

You clearly don't understand the differences between the testing methodology, resulting in the higher rating of the EU hitch. So which one are you ranting about now, first you said quality? now its supposedly stonger? better design? The thread that was quoted was a thread that I contributed to when it originally started. Don't get me wrong, the existing execuhitch product is good stuff, and definitely a cleaner install. To say that the OE hitch is of lower quality because you have a cut out is nonsense. I have not seen one post about a failure of the OE hitch, and there have been several with the initial execuhitch product (which has since been fixed). From my own experience, I've towed over 18,000 miles with the OE NA hitch over the last 3 years, all of which was pulling a 6000lb boat and trailer, with zero issues. Westfalia makes the North American hitch, and the Euro hitch. I'm not sure where you got the idea that Excuhitch makes the hitch for BMW in Europe. In Australia, its Hayman Reece.

And to sum it all up:
The OEM Hitch is excellent and BMW did a great job cutting the bumper to accommodate that excellent hitch. The Execuhitch/Invisihitch is a better hitch if you do not want to cut the bumper and still want to tow 6000lbs. Both products are used as OEM Hitches by BMW.
