I averaged just a little less than that in my x5 e70 35d, so your numbers do not sound outside the realm of possibility. On the x5 boards, most people tout 23-24 from the diesel, but every once in a while you run into the odd man out that only gets 20. But hey, your 20mpg isn't the same as mine...I think it comes out to about to 17mpg US, so you are getting about what I did.
If your driving habits are: not very fast and not very far, then a diesel isn't going to perform at it's best. My commute to work is a big, wait for it, 2.5 miles. Home to school (kid) to work and back again is probably less than 10 miles all on the same 35mph road. My 'sphere of influence' is about 7 miles. I'm lucky enough to even have the BMW dealer within my sphere. I'm in the driving a**hole category though, so adding that to short trips and sitting at stoplights does not bode well for my mileage. I get about 14mpg in my x6 35i. A tank is lasting me two weeks though, so I'm happy. |

My M gets 20-21mpg on freeway keeping speeds between 70-75mph
Tank average is 17-18mpg with 30/70 - city/hwy |

Got a 35d that over a lot of local use showed 26mpg fairly light use. On motorway use I can get 40mpg if I reset the mpg reading but it means cruising at 50~60mph with only light throttle. Start mixing in higher speeds and local roads it soon drops back to 26mpg ave. Mine is stock bar BMW 21" rims and tyres, these seem to have knocked about 1~2mpg off my previous averages.
