Has the transmission replacement fixed the problem for you? I took it to the dealership and they didn't even see the error in the computer readout so they could not do anything to fix it. Like you, I really like my car and do not want to get rid of it, but I'm on edge driving it now and definitely do not want my family in the car if it happens again. And I don't want to trade it in because I'm pretty sure that the dealership will not fix it before selling it to someone else. I don't really know what to do other than contact BMW NA. |

Same issue on my 2011 X3, but I trade it for a 2016 TOYOTA SIENNA limited, I'll never go back to BMW's, I'll never paid 10k for a tranny, I also have a 2011 335is and I think problems with the transmission are coming soon too car feels funny is going back to dealer for a trade before problem gets worth. Thinking of 4Runner.. BMW SUCKS

I wrote a letter to BMW NA and they got back to me promptly with a voicemail. I called the NA rep 4 times over the next two weeks to see what the next steps were and they never called me back. I was very disappointed in how they handled it. I did not feel like taking the car in several more times only to have the dealership say that they can't find anything wrong with it over and over again. I eventually traded in the 535 for a CPO 335i that was practically brand new (estoril blue with the M Performance Kit already installed). I really liked the interior of the 5 series, but lost all confidence in the reliability of the model. We'll see how the 3 series turns out. |

I'll add to this thread. 2012 X6M with 51k and got the message while cruising normally on the freeway. Car went into neutral yet displayed drive. I was able to get the car another mile with some start and stops. Got it parked In a safe spot and had it towed to BMW. New transmission needed and on the way. It was diagnosed in less than an hour. Something about the clutch but dealer will send old tranny to BMW for full diagnosis and I may never hear about results. Lucky me it's under warranty!
I talked with the mech who said all the clutches (for each gear) were going...even reverse. So it's likely not my driving after all and some flaw. Last edited by Tailwinds; 08-14-2016 at 11:20 AM.. Reason: add comment |

This is interesting reading, I have a 2009 730d and exactly the same thing is happening to me, No error codes are showing up. Lots of suggestions (at stupid money!) One person is insisting the gear box software needs updating, but it sounds like from this forum, that won't work! But one garage with a good reputation thinks that it is a well known problem due to the gear box selector switch telling the box to go into neutral. But if it is a well known problem, why is it hard to find any other people suffering the same as us?
Thinking of selling the car as I do not want to spend $4,000 fixing it. |

Transmission Malfunction
My X5 xDrive 35d is now having the same issue of "Transmission Malfunction" described by so many others. The error message adds;
"Drive moderately. Continued driving possible. Reduced acceleration. Have the system checked by nearest BMW dealer."First time it happened set me back $2000, but then it occurred again just a week later after the "repair". It occurred once while trying to pass a truck on a two lane highway in the mountains, nearly causing an accident for me and the driver behind me also trying to pass. The second time they said it needed a quart of transmission fluid, everything else looked fine, and after all, there was no error message logged in the computer. In addition, they noted stopping and re-starting the car, always sets in back to normal. It's happened several other times now, all on the highway when modest acceleration is required. I have been a big fan of BMW, but I believe this problem is truly a dangerous one, I'm dismayed and disappointed by the BMW dealer response to it, and my faith in the BMW brand is going. |

Same thing happened to my ZF ga6hp26z transmission @ 130k miles.
Inland transmission in Northern Michigan was able to fix it and rebuild with 3yr warranty for much less $ than BMW wanted. I also got reasonable quotes from Trans Specialists in NJ, Precision European in So Cal, Euro Trans in So Cal Going forward, I’ll be changing the filter pan and fluid every 60k miles. 2010 X5 diesel Last edited by Cbp; 08-06-2018 at 11:22 PM.. |

My 2009 X5 which I owned for a month is having this exact same issue. Transmission Malfunctioned and disconnected from Engine, DSC/AWD malfunctioned, and DBC Malfunctioned all in one day and the dealer who sold it to me is dragging his feet to fix these issues and other sensor issues I've found

Hello. Please help, I have a problem with the car.
It looks the same, like previously people wrote here, the problem is not permanent, appears time by time, but very annoing. The rest of the time looks good, transmission change gears easy, without kicking. BMW 420D Gran Coupe 2017, engine B47D20 190 hp, automatic zf8hp45, mileage 178 thousand km. Periodically there is a problem with the drive and the gearbox goes to the emergency: on sudden acceleration there is a kind of shock-push, then there are errors - the drive is defective, selector blinks in position D, no gear shifting, as well as there is an error on stabilization. After stopping and shutting down the car, the problem disappears when you start again. It appears rather seldom, there is no any systematics, but it is dangerous, especially when overtaking. No active errors when connected to the diagnostics, but in the history the errors are saved: EGS unit: 420598 Transmission output deceleration: Too large DSC unit errors: D3557A D35577 D35677 Faults on ICM unit: D019AB D0157A I don’t know if there is a connection, but some time ago I visited an official BMW dealer and they updated the software for me. The problem started to appear after that not immediately, after a few weeks. |

I’m sad to say my beloved 2014 X6M (aka the Warthog) with just over 65K miles has started experiencing this. And I just did the major transmission service last year. 🤬 My local indy shop will be looking at it next week, but this thread doesn’t inspire confidence.
