The rwd mode in x delete sets the front torque to 0 nm so f/r torque split is 0/100 vs stock 40/60 and the clutch will stay disengaged in the transfer case. But the clutch is still submerged in the oil so watch your temp on the app to be sure your not over heating anything for a bit. I personally run in sport mode which is a 20/80 split and love it.

No. It was obvious to me the TC was shot, new fluid may have just made it feel a bit better briefly, masking the real issue possibly until after my CPO warranty expired... It appears the Dealer agreed with me as they test drove it, felt the 'crabbing', unplugged the TC, drove it with no symptoms, and told me it needed a new TC.
..and I think I got this with about 6 days left on my CPO coverage!

Hey, I would've gladly let them replace my t-case...under warranty. But I'm curious as to how many t-cases would've been resolved with just an oil change and t-case re-adaptation.
The method the tech used to diagnose the t-case as being an issue was/is identical to what others had performed to their trucks. Why on earth would BMW arbitrarily replace a t-case under warranty if they could've resolved it with a simple oil change/re-adaptation?

I have a 2011 X5 xdrive50i that shows the same shuddering/crabbing at slow speeds with a tight turning radius as described above. Also, when accelerating from slow speeds, it seems to 'skip' when changing gears. Was told by the dealer this was the Transfer Case.
Seems like there are a few potential fixes according to this thread: 1) TC Oil Change + Recalibration 2) TC Actuator Gear replacement 3) Full TC Replacement Any recommendations for which of these are most likely for these symptoms? |

I put in a "reinforced" unit off amazon. Truthfully, I'd rather the gear strips eventually again than the actuator stripping or breaking. planned failure points and all, the gear was cheaper to replace than anything else!
If the original gear lasted that long, and lived 100k miles in Vermont, I see no reason this one will go anytime soon. It's also worth noting that while my original gear lasted 240k miles, I stripped mine while offroading in deep sand/ using lots of articulation and wheel lifts through terrain. My new unit just got pretty abused driving 250 miles through 3-8" of unplowed snow on friday, and at 251k miles is still feeling great! |

In non-specific terms (all I can provide!) it is a calibration routine the computer can tell the transfer case to run, moving the actuator all the way through the range of motion to establish baseline parameters for use. You do this after installing any new parts, or service in order for the unit to know the limits of movement etc so it can operate properly.
Consider it like an 'alignment', but for your TC.

please note that I only have this experience on a diesel, which might be slightly different than the n52 or n55 motors, but should be identical to the to the 50i) Our TransferCase (TC) is set farther into the subframe, so it's a bit harder to get to, but it's still a simple job with normal hand tools. |

The HUGE issue in addition to the cost is finding someone competent that wants to do the work and has the skills and mindset to do it. Dealers and many indys just want to throw parts at it. Smaller shops lack the coding experience/ability to do that. Neither may particularly care about your 12 year old car that you love. I hope you can get this worked out!
