The huge torque in X5D is not that noticeable because of the weigh and slow shifting tranny, where the car lacks big time is in hp department and faster transmission/diff ratio. The 3 series diesel however is totally different animal you can really feel all that torque.
After I remaped my X, I can really appreciate the added HP not so much the TQ. |

Here check my recent thread review on Mega-Speed remap and a comparison to a piggyback (JBD) http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=724706
Chiptuninng Express is another variation of simple rail pressure trick controller as JBD that I had only more expensive for no reason. Both alters single rail pressure sensor and nothing else. |

If you're in US then you have RennTech in Florida or Evolve in Chicago area. Both are world known tuners that offer excellent remaps for gas or diesel.

I was in your shoes a year ago. The reasons I went with gas instead of the D is 1. I couldn't get the Msport on the D. 2. Even though the D has a lot of torque, the gas is still faster according to BMW 3. Prem gas is about .50 cheaper than diesel where I live. I believe the new D's have an 8 SPD tranny now. As far as mpg I get 23 driving 85-90 mpg and about 25-26 driving 70-75.

Winter time the D gets hungry due to very cold temps and snow/decreased traction. 60% of the time the Xdrive has to work decreasing the MPG dramatically in our canadian winter. I usually get around 17 combined during those months.

One thing to note. The 35d requires more frequent services, and this once out of warranty the operating cost go up. Service is about every 5-11k depending on driving pattern . Had mine serviced at 49,790 under warranty then Required a service at 55,000 "oil service". Now showing 11,000 until next. Plus the urea additive. Never had more than a 10k mile service interval . 80% highway, 24.5 mpg since new.
I will buy another diesel .. With the 8speed and new 3.0l diesel fuel economy will be much better.. But that is 2 years off. |

I think the MPG go down because of the additives in winter diesel. There's simply less actual fuel in the tank.

@serge
I use Shell V Power diesel formulated for canadian weather, winter and summer already with same additives for all year round. My MPG is 21-22 except for winter 17-18 on the same fuel. Lots of snow here and -25 to -35C. |

That's a very good point, as it does require additives in the winter to keep it from freezing. Not sure if the gas station actually alternates formulas or not.

Gotcha. The summer is bad for us this year, being in the 100s since mid-June. Turbo cars do not like hot air much, which is causing my average mpg to dip.

I have had 3 gas x5's and this is my first diesel. I was averaging around 16-16 mpg with my 4.8 gas
Now I get anywhere from 18-28 mpg dep. I love my diesel and it is lowered on 22" staggered wheels. |

For the last 3 tanks I'm getting 23-24 combined driving. Average speed 35-40MPH in my city and around. Getting 510+ ml out of the tank with my new remap vs 21-22 in stock or JBD.
