without trying to read a brochure (which will sound like an advertisement), what kind of improvements do you notice between the old AWD system and xDrive? Or what made teh old X5 so bad in the snow?

Well the old X5 for starters.....when traction is poor it is rare that the DSC intervenes, so the truck's back end will kick out when throttle is applied. DSC should intervene and either brake the back wheels or cut engine power and it does neither most of the time. The suspension tuning and the quick throttle tip-in of the truck is always pretty sporty, so the rear wheels spin easily in poor traction situations.
xDrive as I know it in my E90 rarely uses DSC intervention as well, but since the torque distribution varies from 100% rear to 100% front (as opposed to a constant 60 rear 40 front), there is torque only where there is no wheelspin, so progress is alway smooth and straight. I love driving my E90 in the snow, and I don't love driving my X5 in the snow, so you can imagine what it is like for my wife with the kids in the X5 when conditions are poor..... I started a thread at X5world.com asking for people who have tried both systems the difference between the two, and apparently it is monumental.

Since the X3 is out of the question, I would go with a CPO X5 for the wife then. You keep the 330xi. Or if you think you would be happier in an CPO E39 5er, get yourself one of those, buy a used pickup, and give the wifey the 330xi. But I like the first idea better. Since only two of you are driving, you'd always have a car sitting at home just depreciating. I don't know if that's a concern for you or not, though.

We're actually finished our season. It was okay, but the mare got really weird last two shows and DQd both shows. 3 shows ago she was great, when it was 90 degrees and the trailering trip was 3 hours to the show LOL!!
When we got back from Toronto last weekend (without the horse) the mare's left rear leg was all swollen, some bacterial virus that hit her lymph system, so heavy antibiotics, a cold hosing three times a day, and she seems better now, but the show season is over. Oh well, it gives my wife more time to work with the 3 year old filly, she needs to get broken.

well she's back in the paddock with the herd, she's not confined to her stall anymore, and that's good. I still have to go back out tonight and give them all hay for the night and look at her leg.
We have great vet, which helps, eh?

A quick perusal of the Acura website reveals nothing about towing capacities, indicating to me they don't want you to tow with their car.
Idea for crank call..."Hello, Acura salesman? How much can the RDX tow?" ..........silence........... Me:"Thanks anyway!!" Click.

found the thread you were talking about: http://www.x5world.com/x5-e53-forum/...ns-please.html
That was interesting. It's odd that DSC was not kicking in in your old X5. I assume its AWD system is more conventional setup- which means it would work just like in any other AWD vehicle in the market. But for you to hint towards "dangerous" really surprised me. We presently have a Toyota Highlander in the house, with AWD and VSC. I don't think it's the greatest setup either, but I haven't had much problems. The nanny-esque programming of its VSC really retards the power being put down, to the point that the wheels would be turning at 5mph just to get through, and there's no way to shut off VSC (no button), but the grip problems I think are due to the tires largely. |

The pre-2004 X5s are the conventional 60 back 40 front fixed ratio. The only time I experienced a lot of DSC was when I got caught in the truck during a freezing rainstorm with the AS tires, and the DSC intervened frequently, to the point of annoyance. With the winter tires it rarely intervenes, to the point where I thought it was broken (it isn't). Lucky for my wife she doesn't goose the accelerator, but if the weather gets nasty I take it and leave her the xDrive 325xi, because it is FAR FAR better in poor traction situations.
What surprised me the most about the '02 truck is that in my '04 325i, the DSC would intervene frequently and appropriately in the winter, with excellent winter tires.

Funny, I stopped by the Dodge dealership today to get brochures for the Cherokee and the Commander. I think the Commander is too much, but the Cherokee has emotional appeal for my wife (she had one when we met), plus it tows lots and can handle light farm duty with its excellent 4 wheel drive system.

Don't forget to calculate how much it will actually cost you when it depreciates to 20% of its value in 5 years. You might be better off with a new X5.
