Yeah I just ordered the Avin head unit so it should be here next week. I'll ask my buddy more questions regarding how he monitors using the cable. He sent me some pics/vids and it looks pretty sweet

Hi guys,
Since last year, I'm driving a 2011 BMW 35i. Inspired by this thread, I did these mods in past 3 month: MHD flash S2, BMS intake and H&R springs. What mod I should go with to max whp for my money? |

Towing?
I have a question about towing. I'm planning on going to Daytona bike week this year and I'm going to be pulling a 7x14 tandem enclosed trailer from Indiana to Florida. My trailer with my motorcycles and gear will be around 3500-4000lbs. I have pulled this configuration before when my X5 was stock to Michigan. Now I run the Stage 2 (91 oct) for my daily drive, I don't ever flog it. I found I get better mpg's and it's overall easier to drive with this tune. (I have stock cats)
I've grown up around diesels all my life and when towing, high EGT's are not your bad. I'm going to buy a 7" fire tablet so I can monitor the egt's and a few other parameters if I choose to use the Stage 1 tune for towing. I've pulled with it stock before and it works good, It's not a speed demon up large hills though and when towing, more or some extra power is always helpful. Is anyone on here towing and using any of the MHD tunes? From Indiana to Florida I have to go through a couple mountains through Kentucky and Tennessee. (I call them mountains compared to Indiana) I'm worried that prolonged higher boost pressures will increase egt's to an unsafe level. It's a shame we don't have tuners like diesels that monitor egt's automatically and cut boost pressure when a limit is reached. I know diesels are used for towing a lot more so this is a bigger issue with them. I know with gas motors ignition timing along with boost pressure are the contributor to bad things happening to an engine. I'm looking for thoughts or feedback from actual people towing, or Justin's input. I'm not looking to kill a trans or toast my engine. I'm sure running stock is the most safest options and I'm not past doing that. If I have time and weather permits I'm going to try to do a few Stage 1 trial tows and monitor everything. |

the DME's in these cars have similar failsafe's for EGT. that's not just a diesel thing. There are safeties for cat temps and etc. ALBIET, I personally have not thought about our X-series brethren whom may be using these vehicles to tow. So I openly admit that the OTS maps although not dangerous (due to being moderate) were not catered to the Tow/Hauling. I tune diesels and gas pick-ups and etc. as well. So I'm familiar with changes that should be made for towing/hauling. Question...... How many of our X-series owners use their vehicles for hauling/towing? If there is a good amount maybe I can talk to martial about adding a map specific for that. Or you guys can get a custom map for that. Thank you for bringing this up very very valid concern. I'm so used to everyone having 135,335, 535 and etc. I never pondered our X-series suv owners needs. So I apologize for that. |

TT,
I'm glad you replied to my question and concern. I'm going to take a wild stab and say maybe 10% of X owners use them for some type of towing. The other forum I frequent have several posts about towing and setups. Most use X's for campers, boats and racing trailers. The X's have a really good tow rating of 6000lbs and actually tow quite well. I know with my diesel trucks in the past they would say most tunes were good for 2000lbs and anything over that they would recommend a tow tune and not a performance tune. (I know 2000lbs don't sound like much, but they take into consideration most people don't count the weight of the trailer. I've seen a lot of guys towing 2 side by sides on a large steel trailer and claim they are only towing 2000lbs. They don't realize the trailer weights 2000lbs alone) The weather here hasn't been cooperative for me to get my trailer out and load it up to do a couple test pulls. If I get a chance here soon I'll try to post up a couple logs with stage 1. As long as the timing hasn't been pumped up a lot and the egt's stay reasonable it should be fine around my area. It's only when you get into long mountain pulls in hot weather when problems might arise. Do you have any info on the safety's these have for the EGt's? Do they automatically start backing down the timing or boost pressure? Do gas motors work like diesels with egt's, you can drop a gear in a diesel to raise rpm's and drop egt's. I'm sure I'm asking questions 90% of users don't care about, but these are serious questions when towing. Again, thanks for answering these questions. Any information or feedback is appreciated. I don't know if I should have started a new post for this or not. It might benefit in the future. |

If you guys are willing to work with me and get me logs and etc of you hauling and etc. I will put something together and speak to Martial at some point about it. Or just Offer it as a free download for supporting MHD. But yes, if you guys can help with logs. I don't mind helping outside regular OTS map development. I don't have an X-series to test on, so i'll need you guys. Let me know. Logs can be sent to my email. with details of possibly whats being towed and weight and etc. |

I'm in!!! I bought my X5 to tow my 8x10 enclosed trailer packed with 2 race bikes and all the gear. I recently sold my chevy truck and plan on towing an aluminum trailer hauling my spec Miata, which weighs a bit more so I would love a towing tune. It would be really cool if we could do a map switching set up to switch from the performance tune to the tow tune. But it's not like it's hard to load a new tune! MHD is super easy to download tunes on.

Wow, this threads been quite for awhile, I've been busy and forgot about my original question for TT about towing. It seemed a few other people chimed in that they tow also. Without much updates on here, I'm going to try to use the stage 1 tune while towing here in the next few months on a short trip and watch my egt's, oil temp and a few other things. I was hoping this was going to get some of us a tow tune that could have been used for DD driving also. I guess if needed I can go back to stock for towing also. The X pulls great when using manual shifting.
Here lately while using the stage 2 tune I get that dreaded idle up, and then downshift lurch symptom from the trans after coming to a stop. My X originally did this when I installed stage 1+ and after reading about it and learning you had to reset adaptations when installing the tunes, I did this when I installed stage 2. It's been about 3 months after the install, it originally went away with the new clean install. But now it's back and it's terrible. I'm sure others have experienced this. I guess when I go back to stage 1 for towing or stock I'll reset everything and see if it goes away again. I'm not sure if this is tune related or something with the trans learning. This was my bump for a tow tune. |

Any suggestions/recommendations on who can or does the dme removal and what a ballpark cost is for the bench tune?

Been getting some codes lately and I'm wondering if others have seen this on their X5 with MHD...
Codes: 28A0 - intake pipe absolute pressure, plausibility: pressure too high. Shadow code: 2820 - absolute pressure sensor, intake pipe: multiple fault. Mods: intake, downpipe, charge pipe, MHD stage 2. I've been running this setup for about a year code free, but suddenly I'm getting these codes. I took it to the dealer, they said they found nothing wrong and the codes are from the aftermarket intake. So I put the OEM intake back on, and flashed to Stage 0 with MHD.... I still get the codes. Another odd thing I noticed after flashing to stage 0 is that I'm still hitting 14-15 lbs of boost, even saw a peak of 17.7 lbs! On stage 0... Which seems wrong. Anyone else run into these codes on their X5? |
