Honestly, NRing lap time comparisons to an E46 M3 are irrelevant. You're comparing a 550hp car to a 333 hp car on a track where power is a major factor.
It's like saying a 335i is a better sportscar than a honda S2000 because it's faster around the NRing. You're comparing cars seperated by 8 years in terms of technology, and 40%+ difference in HP. I just cannot comprehend what would motivate anyone to buy one of these. It is an uglier 5 series wagon, with less room, that sits 6 feet off the ground, can't go offroad, will get 10 miles to the gallon, have an abysmal power/weight ratio for the engine offered, handle like absolute ass for the advertised level of performance, and cost $100,000. Then again, I appreciate being able to humiliate the guys in the $100k 500hp Merc jeeps when they try to cut me off at lights out of the right/left turn only lane, as they always do. They always seem to give me the finger afterwards though. The fact that I have never run into an AMG SUV at a redlight that doesn't want to stoplight grand prix tells me something about the demographic these things appeal to, and it's not favorable.

Anyways, I like the cars, just not as ///M's...seems slapped together with some ///M badges and ///M glue. Needs to be more aggresive looking. Even the aftermarket seems to have put more work into their X6s: Last edited by vgame64; 04-06-2009 at 05:49 PM.. |

I really don't know the answer to that, I think that they will continue to make it until the next generation x5 is due, but it sure is sad that they did this. By the way, I would'nt have cared so much if they made a proper M suv, but canceling the csl and z4m for this is just wrong, and then to top it off, they gave it an auto and minimally revised engine from the standard car!!! come on!!! .... but the most important question is "why the hell doesnt BMW come out with a super car that will carry the prestige of the brand for our and future generations? i don't know about you guys, but i get goosebumps every time i see a picture or video of a BMW 507, or a tastefully modded e46 m3, or when I see the BMW Film Series. Those are the things that make BMW what it is, not cars that replicate what has already been done. What most people fail to see is that BMW is still making nice and well engineered cars, there is no question about that, but they are NOT FAR AHEAD of the competition anymore, so as time goes by, they lose their advantage and superiority, and that's where they have gone wrong (without taking into consideration the horrific design and flame surfacing that is going into some of the new cars.)

This is completely pointless. Take the regular 4.4 twin turbo from the X5 and X6 and tune it for 2k and you will have the same freaking power output since obviously the engine can take it.
The //M division is truly dieing a slow death. There is no point to this //M, especially since it has the same engine as the regular X6/X5 with just a different tune. Retarded, absolutely retarded. Cheers, e46e92

They probably didn't go with the DCT because the DCT BMW has licensed to use can't handle all the torque. |

Cayenne Turbo has a competitor now. ML AMG was never strong and bold enough to competer with the Cayenne Turbo, but I think X6 will be a better competitor.

That, if completely true, can potentially become a problem in a couple of years when BMW makes the new M5 and M6. They already said they are going to put this (or a similar TT V8) engine into them. There's no way the car can have a manual tranny, and with what you say it won't get DCT either.... The E92 might be last M to have a manual. If BMW starts to put turbos in every M car, the amount of torque it will produce will be too much for a manual... |

^ its a good thing you didn't include GTR in your example, lol.
Yeah, I'll always prefer a manual to an auto, even if the auto is technically faster. Maybe I wouldn't mind it as much in an m truck or a big m5/m6 though. Daily driving does get tiresome at times with a manual...

The one that BMW uses in the 335 can handle 370 lb-ft of torque according to Wikipedia: In January 2008 BMW introduced a double clutch transmission on their M3 model, manufactured by Getrag and dubbed M DCT (M Dual Clutch Transmission). The same transmission is to be used in the upcoming redesigned Z4 (the Sdrive35i version)[4]. For 2009 models, DCT is an option on the 335i. This is a $1600 option over the manual transmission. The transmission is said to be able to hold 500 N·m (370 ft·lbf) of torque.[5] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin-clutch_gearbox Last edited by vgame64; 04-07-2009 at 09:28 AM.. |
