When I was looking for an X5, considered both but just couldn't get past the X6 looks I ended up buying a 2012 X5M instead and have had no regrets.

I love the way the X6 looks with the 214 wheels. But must have those wheels! But the same is true with the X5. No skinny tires allowed. The X6 is more exclusive but I do not like the lack of a panoramic roof.

I too, was all ready to pull the trigger on a 2012 X5M(rear).... until the dealer rolled out this 2010 X6M(foreground). Once I quickly learned about the X6M and its stellar, Torque Vectoring rear differential... I said, "cancel the paperwork on the X5M - where do I sign for the X6M?"
While testing both, I took a corner hard on the X5M and got a little drifty. I repeated the same exact move on the X6M and it hugged the corner like Velcro. I was initially reluctant to buy a first-year X6M. But after seeing the 15-page Carfax service report - I realized this was one of the most-sorted S63 M cars out there, with almost $27,000 of BMW Dealership work done to it(valve gaskets/water pumps/transfer case fluid/intake serviced/rear air suspension, etc). Mind blown....

I forgot to mention the X6 doesn't have a tailgate. I would like to have a tailgate for after a run or biking. I may want to sit on it and rest for a moment and just enjoy the tailgate. Can't do that on a X6.

I sit on my X6M rear bumper all the time.... which in reality is exactly the same height as the X5M folding tailgate half. The difference in driving dynamics is what swayed me to the X6M:

FWIW. I had an the X5 and traded it in for X6M. Before i did this i brought the vehicle home and filled it with the same stuff I normally take away with me on weekend and week long getaways. I found I could still fit everything i needed in. No discerenible difference. Sometimes I have to re-jig my packing to fit the larger stuff toward the front. If I need more room I have a roof box. X6M was the best decision I made. You wont regret it , the dynamics are better than my X5M. Now looking to order my X6MC.

I have driven the newer X5M....and normal X5's......it's no contest....I'm keeping my beast...
Having said that, I am enjoying the X3 M40i, “Wonky Cluster notwithstanding”...a lesser box than the X5's...but more interesting...IMHO... Last edited by Bilbofraggins; 02-27-2020 at 05:27 AM.. |

Adding to the "it will fit" in a space gray X6M - quick family (2 adults/2kids) ski trip from Nebraska to Colorado - 2 large Dakine bags, 3 small bags, snowboard and other miscellanies

I think it boils down to personal aesthetics, some people prefer X5M and some X6M, that's all and surely X6M doesn't drive any better than the 5, as mentioned earlier.
I personally prefer the look of an X5M and that's what's in my garage. |

I dont own a X5, but comparing with my friends X5 besides the head room space on the back seat, really X6 is still plenty enough.

I own an 01 X5 which used to be my partner's daily, and she's now just upgraded out of an X1 to a 13 X6M - the old E53 is my winter car now and for beating up out in the woods. The space difference is pretty significant between the two of them. Leg room in the rear is most noticeable off the bat, and the headroom is pretty significant as well. I think we'd probably miss the split tailgate too if we were trying to use it for a lot of camping or other outdoor activities, but honestly it's just for her to blast around town so for that, the style advantage of the X6 wins over the usable space of the X5 every time

If I had to do it again, I will go for a X6M.
Looks sportier and more badass. Go for a X6 or X6M

I have a x6 and I really like the sportyness of it over an x5.. I also have a GLE SUV and not the GLE couple. Can't have 2 of the same body type, lol |

I got tired of the "everybody drives an SUV" cliche. I had a 2006 X5 4.6i and 2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. I took one look of the 2010 X6M and now realizes the Power Crossover Hot Hatch look is all the rage now. In fact, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and now Porsche has emulated the look, with great success:

It may be the case with the newer X5 and X6s, but it wasn't when the X6 first came out. I went from a 2008 X5 4.8i to a 2010 X6 50i. I was blown away. The drive was completely different. ZERO body roll and it hugged curves like it was on rails. And that exhaust note was sweet! I haven't driven an X5 in years. I'm on my 6th X6, 4 of which were ///Ms. The 2010 50i and the 2013 M were by far my favorite rides.
