Catted Vs Non-catted down pipe (M57)
Hey guys, new to the community here. I’ve recently purchased a pretty clean 2011 x5 with the m57 diesel engine. I knew buying the car I was going to have some issues related to the dpf/scr system and it didn’t take long. I’ve decided to do all the preventative “upgrades” since it seems like the best route. However I can’t find anyone’s opinion on catted downpipes for the m57. All the post I see are related to gas engines. This car is primarily used by my wife, I’m not looking for huge power gains. More less just want it to sound practical and improve long term reliability. If anyone has any experience or advice for me here it would be appreciated.

I just ordered an ATM catted downpipe. Seems like a nice piece, but I have yet to install it. I did an unboxing thread here: https://www.xbimmers.com/forums/show....php?t=2089510

VRSF also wouldn't tell me where they were manufactured, so I have to assume China. ATM is in stock and manufactured in the USA and uses a real DOC as opposed to a gasoline catalytic converter on the VRSF. |

I was trying to be as cost effective as possible, but after considering how long I plan to keep this car it just doesn’t pay off being cheap. I canceled my order through VSRF and went with the ATM set up instead. I also got the EGR block off plate and a swirl flap delete.
I plan on doing this job myself, I’ve been working in the heavy duty diesel industry for 5+ years now. I saw on another thread someone said to get the OEM turbo clamp and a new OEM passenger side motor mount. Any other suggestions as far as parts/hardware go to do this job? |

Update:
For a couple months, I ran a stage 1 tune with everything else stock. Good power and no additional exhaust smells. It did seem to be doing regens more often, which I guess is to be expected, especially if you're using the newfound power more often. I recently had an ATM catted downpipe installed and I went with the accompanying stage 2 tune from DUDMD. I was disappointed with this setup. The exhaust smell was still very strong. In fact, at idle I suspect that the cat isn't doing anything. Sounds good, but the cat cuts down on the turbo sounds. I wasn't very impressed with the DUDMD stage 2 tune. It lost a lot of low-end power and response compared to the the STOCK tune. Seriously terrible response... Mash or even roll into the throttle and it took at least a couple seconds before the turbos spooled up. Once, in boost, yeah, lots of power (and smoke), but at the expense of usable low-end response. I contacted DUDMD about this and they sent me a "Stage 1 tune with deletes." I've been much happier with this tune. Better low-end response, and still has a great top-end rush. A little less smoke on WOT as well. I did a road trip and managed 28.3 MPG which is great for 70-75 MPG. |
