Hey guys,
For the first time in my life, I pulled the first injector out and noticed that there was some brunt oil and the smell of some diesel. However, the injector itself looks really fine. Do I need to worry? Any idea how to clean it? Thanks in advance! |

Maybe the previous owner didn't reinstall the shims that some 2012 m57's require. Perhaps they never replaced the crush washer prior to installing the injector. I would clean everything the best I can and reassess after 1k or so.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...g/13532247156/ I would clean around where the injector seats into the head but I would not touch the actual injector tip. The general consensus on m57 injectors is to not try to clean them or even have them cleaned profesionnally. Just run them until they throw codes and then replace with new. I am sure its possible to clean them or refurbish them but more often then not it causes more issues. |

About the washer- yes I have them, but when I pulled the injector out the washer was very loose so I just took him off to see what was going under, purchased today new washers, and hope they will come quickly. OK, I'll take your advice about the cleaning and will leave it like that. |

Boche makes m57 injectors. Piezo is a type/technology.

I'm asking because I want to know if it's produced before or after January 27. My X5d with produced April 02, 2012 and a few injectors needed the shims. That vin didn't work for me.

Produced January 11th 2012. So your m57 didn't require shims. Looks more like the previous person in there maybe didn't replace the crush washer and or didn't seat the injector correctly

Thinking about it a little more it doesnt seem like the crush washer will prevent gunk from getting to where it is in your first photo anyway and dont remember what mine looked like when I had them out. The crush washer has four little contact points that touch the shaft and the gunk should be able to get past it on the inside while steal sealing the injector against the head.
I think the debris on the top of the injector in photo 2 is pretty normal dirt/grime. Many people think additives are a gimmick but a lot of people run some kind of "injector cleaning" diesel fuel additives every 6-10 thousand thousand miles - in the US I recall people using Hotshots Extreme. Last random thought - excess buildup (not sure yours even qualifies) could be from the engine running cold. The thermostats in M57s are pretty much maintenance items, as they start to open at lower temps over their lifespan and do not let the engine get up to proper operating temp, although I'm not sure if that's a real issue in warmer climates such as Israel. |

I'll check the thermostat too, maybe it needs to be replaced too. However, with the hot warmer climate in Israel, do you think I should do a swirl flap delete? Worth it? And again, thank you a lot for the answer 🫶 |

I'm not sure on the swirl flaps. On one hand they are implemented to increase efficiency at certain RPMs. On the other they are a common area for small boost leaks and just another item to break at higher mileages.
I thought I remembered hearing horror stories about them breaking and the motor ingesting parts, but I haven't read anything about that in a long time so im not sure how valid that is. |
