e70 X5 35d M57 small turbo oil leak
Hi looking for a second opinion on oil leaking into the turbos. I started seeing a large amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust on acceleration. About a day or so later the car went into limp mode & went thru a quart of oil in about 30miles. Also there was an audible whirring noise. I should mention that the car has had EGR cooler codes for a while prior. After researching I decided it was likely oil leaking into the turbo/s. I removed the small (high pressure) turbo and it was "full" of oil & a lot of the turbine blades are damaged (see photos). Also there seems to be too much play in the turbine shaft, compared to the large turbo. Clearly the small turbo is bad and needs replacing, but:
Q1. Was the turbo itself responsible for the oil leak? I don't want to end up installing another turbo only for oil to leak in again. Q2. Has the large turbo been compromised? (See photos) Q3. Has anyone else had this happen? Q4. Should I delete the alphabet soup and install hybrid turbos since I'm replacing. them anyways? |
