2012 x5 35d burning oil
A few weeks back I got a warning light to add more oil so first I check my dip stick and yes the oil was on the low end. I add about half quart of bmw diesel oil and that brought it up to 3/4 full.
My SAV has 111k on it. Is it common for diesel's to burn oil? I never has to add oil before. I had the SAV since 30k going on 5 years. I do not have any oil on my driveway so I am assuming it is getting used up. I haven't got a chance to check under it just yet for leaks but no spots on driveway. |

I normally burn about a half quart between oil changes so never have to add oil between them. But using slightly more oil than should not be a significant concern, I wouldn't think.

It all depends on how old the car is and the maintenance.. older car tend to burn more when your turbos, valve cover gaskets, oil pan or other parts start leaking then you'll find yourself topping off your oil more often

I have a 2013 X5 with a 35d fully deleted...196000K miles.
It and it starts up with a cloud of blue smoke. It was using a qt every 2000 miles, burning and leaking oil....I changed the VCG and got rid of the leaks...now it just uses oil at the 1 qt / 4000 miles. That is probably not bad considering the miles on it but I feel now blow by in the valve cover when I place my hand over the oil cap. If it is not below by is it the turbo seals? |

burning a lot of oil a quart every 250-300 mi
hi guys, how much time do you think the engine on my X5 has left? I'm adding now a quart every 250-300 miles, I have to travel with a jug in the trunk ;-).
Is there something else I could do to keep it running longer. I'm not going to replace the engine, I'll just drive it till it dies ;-). |

Turbos could be burning oil as well, you could check gaskets around throttle body, you may also have a leak around charge pipe.

I do have some oil around the charge pipe. Is that and indication of bad turbo seals?
Is using a qt every 3000 to 4000 miles bad? Appreciate the help...I have some time now to start digging into this. |
