Timezone.com is very good.

Then watch manufacturer websites, Patek Philippe site is very good, glossary and might as well familiarize yourself with the best. Patek glossary https://www.patek.com/en/glossary

YouTube has some great old animations on how a simple mechanical watch works

Starting to learn from how a watch functions...quartz, mechanical and analog. Noob here so I'll take it slow. I started out with Invicta which sounds like nobody likes but I am venturing out to other makes

I started out innocently. I wanted to give my son a nice watch for his high school graduation and to celebrate his achievements. So I did what I typically do before buying anything that costs in the thousands. I found hodinkee.com just read and read. Watched videos and really got into it. It has become a true interest of mine. Not an expert by any stretch, but I've developed a huge appreciation for horology. I ended up getting him a beautiful Omega Speedmaster. Since then I've purchased another half dozen mechanical watches. I wear a Seiko SKX007 every day and highly recommend it as a first mechanical watch.

I just ordered a SKX009J. Was going to order the 007, however, to close to my SS black dial Sub. Before purchasing, I did a lot of research. I'm hoping my 009 becomes a favorite.

I love my skx007 - for me it was a great compliment to the car - clearly better engineered than a pedestrian model, but without the fancy branding (I know a/t with a roundel is considered a fancy car, but the 2 is not the 'impress your neighbors' model). I lucked into one that was made right about when I purchased the car, and w/ SN #1007 (but unfortunately no garotte or explosive charge). I'm seriously considering adding a pepsi, or perhaps the orange version, and trying out a strapcode band.

Lots of YouTube channels about all aspects of watches including care and new models. Be careful as others have said a little knowledge can be dangerous. Pretty soon those fancy watches you bought seem like crap and need new ones.

I've lusted after watches my entire life, especially Rolex. Over the last 20 years, I've had the opportunity to own some very nice pieces (and make a profit in the process).

Take your time and buy from a reputable seller or authorized dealer. It may cost you a little more, but it's completely worth it.

Here's a Youtube channel that has some great information on all sorts of watches.
Have fun!

Protip: Make sure you change your watch fluid at least once every 12 months to maintain accuracy.

i am loving the new sea dweller 126660. for the rolex pros:

what is a fair ad price for this watch new? i am seeing $14-15,000 range.

what is the general consensus on resale value say 5 and 10 years from now? the older generation 116660 seem to be taking a dive right now and great deals can be had.

im sure just like buying exotic cars there is an ideal way/time to buy and resell taking little to no hit or maybe even making a few bucks over time. i just need to be educated in the watch game .

You can check www.watchrecon.com to get a sense of what people are asking for a certain model. Asking and getting are two different things.

As far as resale values, the last two gens of Sea Dwellers are kind of a bargain right now. They have definitely dropped and seem to be a better deal than the more popular subs.
I've been watching this market for a while. I have my eye on either a DRSD or a 1665 Rail Dial Sea Dweller. For a while, prices were completely out of hand. I believe most stopped buying them. I'm content to wait.
The 16660 has gone up pretty quickly as well. It seems to be following the 1665 in pricing trends. Some private buys can be found for decent prices with and without documentation. Others are just plain stupid with the prices they're asking.

Careful ;)

Yeah I agree to what many others have said in this thread. Once you start learning about watches, the more gear you're getting. Today I have 10 watches plus 2 watch winders.
You've been warned

This is the best way to learn about mechanical watches because it includes the history, romance, and current fads and sub-culture.
