Barcelona - Any Recommendations?
Hey all, the wife and I just touched down in Barcelona for a week. Any recommended sites, restaurants, cafes, attractions? We are in our 40s so our late night clubbing days are behind us. Other than that open to whatever.

Just don't go. Come to Finland! I have a beautiful city you could visit right after you've helped me out a bit with a minor project. I don't own a kitchen now so you would learn some extreme survival skills for free too.

Sagrada Familia, go to the piers, Las Ramblas (near the piers), and that castle up the hills (forgot the name). To get to the castle, if you’re facing the waters/piers, just go right and keep heading up the hills. There are stairways and you’ll pass a small park with graffiti on the walls (pretty cool stuff).
Lots of good restaurants but unfortunately don’t remember the names. You have to try the Iberian ham there. The farmers market is a good place to try all that. |

All good recommendations above! We enjoyed hanging out at the beach as well... Park Güell is one of the Gaudi spots you don't want to miss which as a bonus has great views of the city.
But watch out for pick pockets!! Can be really bad on the metro and in tourist areas. Had one try to pick me just as the the metro was coming to a stop but felt him and stopped him. Common tactic, pick you and hop right off to never be seen again.

I would additionally highly recommend you to close your pockets, hide all cameras and worthy stuff while waiting at the almost large entrance crowd at the sagrada basica caused by pocket thieves.
To be honest, the entrance fee is ridiculous and I refused to pay. Las Ramblas are ok just to see, the prices there are much too high, tourist terrain Gaudi museum is very cool, be sure to arrive there before 9AM, later on lots of busses there are spitting out countless hords of tourists and its getting there quite crowded. Use the underground, simple and cheap. Dont miss out the marina, grocery hall and local food. We had our stay very outside of Barcelona in a location with name Castelldefels, hotel was one of the Best Western group and it was just a few minutes from the train station. Not very far from the beachline, nice small taverns into it and travel time to central station round about 30 minutes.

My favorite part of Barcelona was walking through the old streets of the Gothic Quarter, and one of the most interesting things to see there is the Musea d’História de la Ciutat (City History Museum) where you can see subterranean Roman ruins. As mentioned, Montjuic Castle is also worth checking out.
And of course, anything Gaudi is worth while as well.

No issues with pick pockets thanks to the good advice here. No unattended bags. Hands in pockets. Sitting on the Metro instead of standing near a door. Common sense stuff. Great tips and ideas everyone, thank you! Having an awesome time! |

I lived there for 2,5 years.
Enjoy one of the many free rooftop bars the city has to offer. You could go to one of the following hotels and just go to the upperfloor to enjoy: Hotel 1898 Hotel Majestic Grand Hotel Central Barcelona Hotel Cuitat Try to eat some tapas in the following places: Vinitus Bar Brutal Tantarantana Sensi Mezzanine Chill out with some drinks at: Bar Numero Nueve (evening time) Mr. Robinson Fok Bar And if you like some more upscale places, for example to take your wife for dinner, check out: OneOcean Club Torre d'Alta Mar |

Torre d'alta mar is actually a high tower like a mini Eifel that gives you a view over the entire city and sea.
OneOcean Club is a private club overlooking the yacht port. Very nice. I can give you my membership number in a private message. |

Las Ramblas might be the only Street worth checking out. There is a useless lizard everybody loves. I didn't like the town at all. I would catch a train and head into the Spanish countryside. Can't go wrong.

Let me know what you feel like eating and I can make a few more detailed recommendations: from pizzas to hamburgers to tapas to Japanese. The city has all on offer. |

Oh, and where do we get a good espresso in Barcelona? Spanish espresso is supposed to be great but it's been disappointing thus far. Went to Satan's coffee which is supposed to be good. It was pretty awful, but, we are from Seattle so we are spoiled by the best coffee! Thanks for all the help! |

Check my tapas recommendations. These are all authentic and very easy to enter, nothing fancy. Check them out on Google Maps but out of the top of my head in walking distance + neighbourhood)
Vinitus (Eixample - 20 minutes) Bar Brutal (El Born - 10 min) Tantarantana (El Born - 10 min) Sensi Mezzanine (Gothic - 0-5 min) These places is all sitting and dining tapas. If you want to live the real, standing by the bar-kind of tapas where you can find L. Messi undercover on a Sunday, check out Bar Jai-Ca. You wouldn't rate this a 4 out of 10 looking from the outside but it has some of the best seafood tapas & vermouth that Barcelona has to offer. It especially has a great atmosphere on Sunday mornings/afternoons. In any of the aforementioned bars you can get a delicious coffee. Ask for a 'cortado' if you like your espresso with a dash of foam. In Spain the rule is: the more the bar looks run down and tastelessly aged, the better the coffee. You order and drink it at the bar and be on your way. |
