5w30 or 0w30
I have a 2012 x6 50i
I noticed the 0w30 is the replacement of the 5w30. Is there much different between the oils? what do you guys use in your car? Thanks in advance! |

My two cents will be determined by the current mileage of your ride.
I have a E71 X6M. I'm nearing 60k miles and just did an oil change. The dealer recommend and changed my oil to 0w-30 from 5w-30. My first assumption :will be to prolong engine life being that your mechanical parts are aging and it will put less effort to churn thicker oil and helps make the engine run more efficiently. My SA said it's time to change, not gonna argue that, cause if anything the "potato" is in there hand. It's more pros to lighter oil anyway. Plus you get about 2-5% better fuel efficiency. Pending how heavy you are with your foot. CHEERS Bro |

I would do 5W unless you live somewhere super cold. 0W is a more sophisticated oil because it's flows better in cold temp but that also means it has more additives.

what's the weigh in on 0w-40? I thought that was the oil to run through the n63s?

BMW Parts pulled up a bulletin for me showing 5W-30 was the official oil for all the newer turbo cars to include the S63. The service advisor said he changes his oil every 5k miles at the dealer using Mobil 1 European Formula 0W-40 since it's basically the same thing. I've heard that before since european viscosity measurement is different somehow?

Viscosity is set by SAE, so it should be what's on the quart. It is set through a math formula that determines what the viscosity is. The European oils have a grading system through ACEA, that is comparable to API on our side of the pond here. That is the difference I believe you are hearing about, though I could be wrong, it happens
http://techmax.ca/european_import_ca...ifications.htm in reference to the two standards of grading. I may be wrong about viscosity, I think your SA was trying to tell you the difference between 5w oils and 0w oils is negligible, and should not be something to fret over.
