Front end drivers side clunking
Driving over bumps I hear a clunking from the front drivers side. Found this brown crud in the top of the strut tower. Looks like something is deteriorating under the top strut bolt. The passenger side is doing the same but not as bad. 2009 3.0 with 61k miles.
I've had a noise similar to this on a e39 and it was the top strut bearing. Does the X5 have the similar set up? The realOEM reference looks like just a top cap of some sorts.

Some sort of hard rubber. $13.00 part that the whole strut needs to be removed to replace.

Looks like the seal on the strut is busted. I had an issue like this on a previous set of coilovers. Oil from inside the strut would leak out, accumulate dirt, and look nasty like that. I could hear clunking noises inside the cabin whenever I was going over bumps. You could either have the strut rebuilt or just replace it and move on. If it's a factory strut I'd recommend just having it replaced.

No it's the guide support for sure you can see it's cracked and the powdery material is rubbery.
