Walnut Blasting on N55 35iX?
There is a lot of talk of needing the walnut blasting service done on the N54 engine every 30k miles. The N55 nothing stated I can find officially, but folks are saying about every 50k miles.
Is it needed on our e70's? Lots of the 1 and 3 series folks talk about it...

There is only ONE search result on this forum(x5 section) about the service, the rest of the hits are in the 1/3 series forums and other BMW centric forums.
Granted we're a smaller bunch than the 1/3 series counterparts; It's just not mentioned for the e70 at all in any meaningful way. |

I find it hard to believe that this is even necessary at such a low mileage interval. Just the risk to electronic and plastic componentry with removal and reinstallation make it appear to be an unnecessary risk. Despite the (slightly) higher carbon buildup on valves inherent with direct injection, why wouldn't using premium fuel and periodic fuel system cleaner mitigate this until beyond 100k miles?

They do not touch the back of the valves or ports. Add to the fact that any unburned fuel from say a ping event, can/will/possibly make carbon deposits behind the valves.

There's no carbon to build up until after detonation (3rd stoke), no?

No. You have intake valve coking. This wasn't an issue before as you had fuel cleaning the intake valve; there is no nothing to clean the intake valve. Care to guess what causes the intake valve coking?

No one knows for sure. Some postulate crankcase ventilation gasses.

Just had this done on our 2011 35i with 42k miles on it. Not nearly as dirty as my N54 was with 55k on the clock.
I'd say every 50-70k is fair for the N55. Per my SA they do not suffer from build up nearly as bad as the N54. |

Hmm.. Well I'm at 58k so I might just do this if I can find a good deal on the service. A few years back BMW of Bellevue was offering it at around $400. BMW of Seattle wanted at that same time around $1000. No indy shops I could research on the interwebz seemed to be offering the service.
