Sorry the previous post is not accurate.
Tax is only gst plus ur provincial tax, 5-? Percent. No duty, Cluster swap is not required, drl can be programmed through Idrive or permanently coded by US dealer for about $50 or do it urself with coding kit. Recall letter can be a simple status report from authorized reseller in US. Savings can be significant, approximately $12-25k depending on model and options. Good luck,

So the calculation would be US$ purchase price converted to CDN$. Using $50K as the sale price and $1.03 on the conversion it breaks down like this. $50K USD x 1.03 = $51 500 CDN DUTY 6.1% = $3141.50 A/C Tax =$100 Green Levy =$1000 (Depends on model) Subtotal =$55 741.50 PST 9.5% =$5295.44 GST 5.0% =$2787.08 Total CDN $ =$63 824.02 This isn't to say there aren't good deals on importing vehicles from the US, but be aware of how the calculations actually work. By far the best advantage comes from bringing NA made vehicles up with where our dollars are at. The two sites that you need to deal with are Customs and Transport Canada. http://www.riv.ca/CostConsiderations.aspx http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/...f5048-eng.html |

There's a dealership in Toronto called Unity Auto that provides the BMW recall letter and allows you to bypass the modifications.
you still need the daytime running lamp for the canadian tire inspection though but any car audio/alarm store can do it for you for under $75 also remember that he angel eyes on the X5 do count as "Daytime running lamps" for Canadian tire's purposes

Assuming a 50k USD sale price, today it will cost you $50112 if you purchase your forex from http://www.canadianforex.ca (that's who I used). So the only addtional fees are a minor forex premium, and RIV fees of $164 (if I remember correctly). Get the dealer to give you a warranty inquiry, program your DRL permanently on (You can do it yourself). Get your car inspected at Canadian Tire (RIV's federal inspection station), and you can have it plated without ever having to visit a local BMW dealer. Its totally worth it to buy in the US.

I once imported US car to Quebec a while ago. I am not sure this was typical sequence butam certain that you will have to go through all. I just drove by the customs and they gave me some papers. I was taken to the office called, "Registrar of imported vehicle." It was not far from the customs office but was not a a walking distance either. Basically, my car was put on the system as an imported car and I had to pay about $200 for this. I am still not clear what this office does, to tell you the truth.
I went to SAAQ for the plate, and I was told that I have to collect some documents. First I had to do safety inspection and got a list of stuff I had to modify. You can modify it anywhere you want (or by yourself). They don't care about miles to Km as long as your speedo has Km/h on it. After this modification, I went to the certified mechanics and got a stamp that my car was compliance to Canadian safety. With a certification of compliance and recall letter obtained from a car manufacturer, I went back to the customs office again to finalize my importing process. An officer checked documents and stamped on them. With this stamped/finalized documents from customs office, I went back to SAAQ and got my Quebec plate. |

There is 1.9% or so duty on N.A. built vehicles.
You can save a lot, though. In summer of 2011, I had a quote from a BMW dealer in Indiana, for a brand new - to be built 2012 X5 diesel with 7 seats for $52k on the road. There was a $4k eco rebate included. |

Im pretty sure it is against the law to charge duty if the vehicle was built in the US, NA free trade agreement.

recall letter problems
I am seriously looking at importing a 2010/2011 X5 diesel , done my research and will likley search for vehicle in Washington / Oregon area. Spoke to dealer in Seattle who has 2 2010 x5 and he said they would not supply Recall Letter from BMW , that is my responsibility . I have heard that this can be around $500.00 and take about 2 weeks.....does this sound accurate ?
