Keeping Cats Away from My BMW
Hi.
Occasionally cats get on top of my car and as a result they scratch the surface when they move. The scratches are minimal but they're bothering me. A friend of mine mentioned a cat liquid that when dribbled on to a car cats get crazy because of the smell and doesn't even get close to your car. Besides, the smell could not be smelled by human beings. It's totally odourless to us. Is this real? If so where can I find it? Or do you know of any other tactic that could possibly make cats stay away from my car. Thanks. |

Try spraying a spray bottle or leave cups of vinegar around it till it breaks their behavior problem. I just saw a YouTube video that cats hate the smell of vinegar and you can use this tactic on furniture. Not sure if it would harm paint, but maybe put some on the tires too?

You could also invest in a cat trap, and trap and release the cat far, far away from your house. I don't know what the laws are like in Turkey but where I am feral cats are a big no-no. |

Here's what I do. I cut hot dogs into small bite sized chunks. Then I soak them in antifreeze and leave them near the car in the driveway.
Don't misunderstand me. I like cats. But I love my car. |

They don't like the scent of any cologne. Just spray on a piece of cloth, rub it on non paint items, like tires, glass, windows etc..
I usually use a cover for my M3. |

What kind of scratches are you getting? The family cat lounges on my roof from time to time and aside from wipeable paw prints I've never had any scratches.
I know apparently it is perceived to be a little pretentious nowadays, but back in the 80's I had a Civic that was pretty important to me, parked in an apartment complex and I put a car cover on it. Aside from having to manage it during thunderstorms it was very effective at keeping the car free of spots and paw prints.

I'm sure that was a joke as it is a prosecutable offense in most cities.
However, back in the olden days out in the country, if our colony of cats got too big we'd have "cull the herd". It was very unnerving as we had the "inside" cats we liked, then the working cats that lived outside". Generally they stayed between 12 and 18 in number but occasionally would swell into the 20's then my dad would come out with a couple of .22's and the reaping would begin. I never got used to shooting cats.

Same. Have detailed cars on the side for years. Vinegar can be used to remove tar, sap and water spots but HAS to be mixed at a 3:1 ratio (vinegar to water) at least.
With this being said, I also work for a company that produces vinegar. After seeing what it does to steel and concrete, I no longer use it on cars at all. I would also not recommend a car cover. This will only make the scratches worse. If a cat gets on your car, with a cover and the cover slips under the cats paws, what will a cat do to ensure traction? Yes, it will use it claws to gain traction, thus penetrating the car cover and digging it's claws into your paint/clear coat. I fight the same battle anytime my car is parked at the girlfriends house over night. Cprayed my car with CMX back during the spring. Same night I went to stay with the girlfriend before the car had time to cure. I now have paw prints embedded in my CMX coating until the coat wears away. |

After parking your car for the night, get a bucket of water and drench the whole vehicle. This process will suck if you hate water spots. However, cats like to rest and sleep on car hoods for the motor's warmth after a drive. The parked car is also security for them since they are off the ground from potential threats. Cats are nasty and absolutely hate getting wet. If your car is wet recurringly, it's no longer a comfortable environment for them to rest. You may have to do this for a couple of nights for them to get the message.
While I don't advocate animal cruelty as an alternative, invest in an air rifle. On good shot on the arse, the cats will remember that this area is not safe to roam around. They have good environmental memory. Just don't fire once they are close to your car Whatever you do don't feed them antifreeze like I believe someone implied, it's inhumane and they will literally bleed out from the inside and swell up like a blowfish.
