Powdercoating or Painting X5M brake calipers
I have decided to go ahead and powdercoat my brake calipers, as going to a BBK is cost prohibitive, and would prevent me from running my 20" snow tires and wheels.
I have identified a powdercoater, and will be choosing a color, but I need to find the ///M stickers i want to put on them, and I also need to identify what parts will be necessary for my mechanic to put everything back together after powdercoating, so this can go as smoothly and quickly as possible. I thought doing a dedicated thread that could serve as a resource for other considering this mod would be helpful, so please post up your experiences, pictures of your finished product, parts lists or numbers, anything that would be helpful in this process. Here are a couple links to threads that have inspired me to do this:

I keep going back and forth if I'm just going to do this and get some adams rotors or buy a proper bbk. Good luck with everything and I look forward to your progress.

The ability to switch back to 20's in the winter is a necessity, so the BBK is out for me. |

It was 54 degrees this morning. Had to wear a long sleeve shirt for once. Sure now it's just about 75 degrees but still... |

I'm thinking a bright shade of blue - any recommendations on a particular color?
I like the looks of these - can it be replicated in powdercoat? http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=928269 |

Installing them soon? Would love to see some pics if so. These pics make a strong case for not going bbk. |

OP these turned out great. See a dimpled design rotor. They work well and never have to worry about micro cracks.
I'm in the same boat as you with winter. However, I did go with the BBK set up( see one of my threads with the pics) and ended up having to have a custom 20 made to clear. Amazing most cast or I should say all cast 20s out on the market won't clear and it's related to the caliper hitting the barrel and not the spokes. Perhaps in the future I will go with the bigger size and have 2 sets of wheels. But for now riding on conti DWS have been more than adequate for the Boston winter And my weekend trips to go skiing. Love the color OP and look forward to seeing them on. |

[QUOTE=X5_MSPORT;15333745]These calipers seem to be pretty hard to find, wanted to upgrade my OEM M Sport brakes.. but not had much luck finding any calipers.
I have a set of front OEM calipers, rotors and brake lines I will be selling off of my X5M once I put the orange ones on. I was planning on swapping them onto my wife's diesel but I decided against modding her rig. I would be looking for at least $1,500 shipped with pads that are almost new. I wanted to run my OEM wheels for winter so as much as I want a BBK I hope these do the trick for me as well. I should book it to get them done, I was also considering doing it myself. My buddies (car guys) are really getting on me about getting all of my work done at a shop lately. I built my +700hp G35 in my garage and now I take my BMW to the shop for a brake job....

A little change in plans - the only garage around me that handles any significant volume of BMW's is hesitant to tear the calipers apart as would be required for for powder coating (actually, I think they are more concerned about putting them back together), so it looks like we will be painting them instead. I have elected to go with Monte Carlo Blue Metallic for the color, and will be applying ///M stickers and clear coating over the top. Looking to get this accomplished next week - should look amazing when done!
Hopefully they will soon look like this, but even better with the ///M stickers! Last edited by upstate650; 02-12-2014 at 02:45 PM.. |

Can't wait to see some pics. Getting adams rotors as well or just reusing your stock ones?

good question. I'm 5K miles away from needing new rear pads, according to iDrive, anyway, so I was definitely going to replace the pads - am I likely to need new rotors anyway?

Btw if you are going all out try to get some stainless steel brake lines. These will firm up and improve pedal feel. Not sure if any are made for our cars without getting a true bbk though. |

That is a sexy time rotor right there! Regarding pads, while I don't like brake dust either, I much prefer better stopping power so I would get the stop tech's over the posiquiets. Pads and fluid are much more important to improving stopping power than a bbk anyways. All a bbk really does is dissipate heat better allowing repeated hard use before the brakes stop working i.e. track work only. To top it off get better brake fluid. Castrol's is best imo due to it's one year change intervals and excellent boiling points though it ain't cheap. Motul would work well too, though it need to be flushed every 4 months or so for optimum performance. I say for 1500 plus whatever it costs to get the calipers painted is a far more affordable solution than 7k worth of bbk. Plus you are getting 95% of the look of a bbk anyways and for the street, stock performance is more than enough so this 'upgrade' will be great. Will look just like the M5's and M6's now. This is tempting. I've almost talked myself into it. Must resist... |
