Only advantages
Diesel gives more range, better economy, and ..... there are no lines for diesel when the gas lines are long (I'm in NY after Sandy, and skipped a 2 1/2 hour line yesterday). New (diesel) generator coming soon too!

I wish they had the the M diesel variants state side. I would have picked one up in a heartbeat. For this size truck, the TQ offered by the diesel is unbeatable and would make for a very balanced driving experience, considering the fuel economy benefits as well!

My 3rd X5 diesel is at the port and should be here next week. I absolutely loved my other two. MPGs are around 30 on the highway. My X5D got better mileage than my 335i sedan. I drive a lot, so the efficiency is huge. Plus tons of torque

You don't get anywhere close to the amount of snow or cold I see out West here in the Rockies and I comfortably average 24 mpg combined and can get up to 29 mpg on the highway when cruising inside the Park, using the exact same V Power. |

A diesel generator is a good idea. Any suggestions on brand? 12.21.12 is coming up soon!

Depending on how big your house is, get a Whisperwatt 7000 diesel generator. Very badass and mine has been running 10 days straight without a hiccup. I unfortuntately still don't have power yet because of Sandy. It is powering a 6k sq ft house and burns exactly 10 gallons every 24 hours.

This "tow-able" version just sold for $3K and as the guy above can attest, NOTHING can be as important in a power outage situation. Those of us in "Hurricane" potential states have either looked at or installed these previously. While the devastation is large in the Northern States, they are simply experiencing what we experience each year (do I buy a generator or risk being without power for 5 days (or longer). We also have ice storms here quite regularly and those also tend to bring down power so we actually are at risk 2 seasons out of each year. Hopefully, those in the northeast will recover quickly.

I get 16.5 mpg on my 35i. I plan to order the new body style x5d 4th quarter of next year as a 2014 model. I had the opportunity to have two x5d for a week at a time will servicing my car and I got around 24 mpg so was very impressed.

Ok here's some real world data on a 35i with 7900 miles on it. Drove 167 miles averaging speed between 80-90 mph. I filled up prior to leaving and then filled up at my destination. I used 7.6 gallons 89 octane. Do the math it's 21.9 mpg. The computer said 21.7. I think it gets 1-2 mpg better with 93 oct but BMW says use 89 oct on the gas tank door. Diesel where I live is $3.99/gal where 89 oct is $3.14/gal. So in my area it's just not worth it for the diesel. Also the air temp was between 58-62 degrees.

I agree I get a good 29mpg hiway cruising at 120km/hr the worst I have got with a mix of city/hiway driving and some sustained 130-140km/hr cruising was 23mpg. I can't get enough of the torque, I have an ECU remap and it really woke the engine up. I will say it does suck that diesel is slightly more expensive than premium right now. |

I did a search on gas buddy in your area and while there are stations charging $3.99, it looks like there are also a number charging $3.72. However, over .50/gallon would probably be even to have even me running regular. |

Ndabunka; when I say real world I mean actually driving an extended distance and measuring the amount of gas you use divided by miles driven. A lot of people post just what their computer says, but I feel those computer numbers can be fudged a little. 22 mpg in a 4900lb vehicle driving 80-90mph isn't bad at all IMO.
At about .75 more per gallon I don't think there's much of a savings with diesel in my area. Besides getting 29 mpg in a diesel driving 80. I'd have to see it to believe it. The hwy mpg posted on a diesel is 26 and gas is 23. Now I get 1 mpg less than that at 80-90 so I'm betting the diesel wouldn't get but 26-27 mpg driving 80.

I just ordered a 2012 diesel for its better mpg as one of the added benefits. But, diesel being 20 cents more than 93 Oct around where I live, I am not sure the mpg advantage of the diesel will work in my favor.
I will enjoy the SAV no matter what. |
