OEM 20's and Alignment
Im looking for some input from the forum.
My two front tires are showing wear on the outside edges. They have just about 17k miles on them. They are the Bridgestone Runflat 20's.After noticing the wear I thought my alignment was off but then noticed other X5's with simil'ar wear. My dealer said my tires "are shot and need new tires and alignment." I dont think they are totally gone yet, but understand the wear is significant. I got the alignment done at the dealer and suggested they adjust the toe as close to 0 as possible and add more negative camber, which I have heard is really hard if not impossible to adjust. This all in an effort to counter the outside wear. After the alignment, the car hangs to the right, which it did not before alignment. The steering wheel is not centered either. I plan to go back soon and get it re aligned. Here are pictures of current tire wear. Any thoughts? |

You need a front wheel alignment alright, I never buy a new car without recieving the wheel alignment printout.
I make the dealer do a wheel alignment, they charge you a delivery fee so make them earn it. The statement that its done at the factory might all well be true but its what happens to the vehicle by the time you get thats the problem. And you should keep an eye out on your tyres, that sort of wear would be noticeable in the first 500 miles and you could have taken it back to the dealer and asked for a wheel alignment. If there is no visable marks or scratches on your wheels the dealer would do it under warranty.

Yeah I have the same problem on my 2011 x5 35d at 5000 km noticed all tires have unusual wear took it to the dealer and said that they are aligned that way for handling but I don't understand why. The wheel base of this suv is so wide that we don't have to worry about tipping over and the suspension is so stiff why put a positive camber to enhance the performance on cornering. I don't want to have to replace tires e every 12000 km that gets expensive especially on 20 inch tires

Yeah I have the same tires on my 2011 X5 50 and the EXAXT Same
Problem; rear tires look great, outside edges of the fronts are bald...it's my wife's car and I rarely drove it so I didn't notice till it was too late. Might hold out a little longer but new tires and a better alignment are in my near future. |

thanks for your guys' input. i agree with everyone. especially with watrob, i definitely will request alignments upon purchase/lease of new cars
i got an alignment done a few days ago and it drives alright, hangs a little to the right and the steering wheel isnt centered exactly, but its bearable. i told the dealer about this but they say its because of my existing tire wear, lol. so we are going in circles. the car drove strait before all of this. ill give it another week and see what happens. |

I have noticed on your second tyre photo (lefthand front wheel) every third rubber lug has a raised edge, you can tell by the dirt on those raised edges. This is a sign also of under inflation (scolloping) due to heat.

Annoying as I have the EXACT same symptoms yet I am only at 10kmi - outside Dunlops are bald. I contemplated the Conti's, but do not want to lose runflat/get a spare due to 3rd row seating option.
My next set will be with a fresh alignment to reduce toe to as near as 0 as possible. I'm annoyed because I thought my last 4.8is E53 was bad at tire wear around 15kmi - now I'm only at 10kmi and bald tires - grrrrrr.

Same with mine, 20" Dunlops 17k miles the rears are perfect still 50% good. The left front is bald outside, right front is ok, both have less then 30% left in them. Had to put a new rubber set all 4, did an alignment before putting new ones on, dealer said it was bad. Car drove straight, with a slight hint to the left barely noticeable.

So you can see what happens when you make it a righthand drive and drive it on the opposite side of the road that has lefthand camber. To overcome the pulling left you need a castor kit to pull the lefthand wheel forward and pull the righthand wheel back 5mm.

I got a 2012 E70 35i Sport, same issue at 15k miles. I hit a pot hole 5k miles ago, so I thought that was the cause. Now reading this thread, I realize the X5 alignment is setup to pull to the left causing the left front to wear first, then right front, then rears.
I hate my noisy and heavy Dunlop RFT. I just ordered a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS (non-RFT) for all 4 corners. I hear amazing reviews on these shoes. They should be quiet and drive better. For the price of 2 front Dunlop RFT, you can get a set of Contis. |

Also I realized that with the lack of camber on the X5's, maybe the weight of the car on turns adds to the excessive wear on the outer edges of the tires. |

I just got a set of takeoff Bridgestone's for $800 and the rig is in for an alignment, mount and balance. My stock dunlops only lasted to 12kmi and I'm extremely irritated. I'll report back here with the alignment specs before/after and hopefully these Bridgestone's will last a bit longer
I'd have gone with the Conti's, but really like the idea of having the runflats - especially due to our third row option and travel habits. I may be in the minority, but I actually like the slightly stiffer ride of the runflats vs the softer sidewall Conti's. I ran those on my previous E53 4.8is and did NOT notice any improvement with tire wear - regardless of the fact that the treadwear is sky high in comparison to other tires. On that rig I ran the Diamari's, Latitudes, and the Conti's and all of them wore down at similar mileage. Remember, each manufacturer rates their treadwear from what I recall so I take treadwear with a grain of salt.

Me too! I always thought this was due to all the aggressive cornering in such a heavy vehicle.
Funny, I came from an E92 M3 to this and still can't believe how this truck takes corners!

i think its a great idea especially with the third row option and knowing others driving the car will be safer when it comes to potential flats. if i had a family or kids driving it i would definitely do the same.

I can't believe I even achieved 12,888mi on the Dunlops with these alignment settings - ugh
Before/After Front left Camber -0.3/-0.3 Toe 0.17/0.06 Front right Camber -0.1/-0.1 Toe 0.11/0.06 Rear Left Toe -0.05/0.07 Rear Right Toe -0.1/0.06 Before/After Front total toe 0.27/0.12 Rear total toe -0.15/0.14 Crossing fingers that I can get >15kmi after the alignment
