Software upgrade costs 2k...are there better alternatives?

Don't forget BMW has their own coming out for the 2011-2013. Probably won't have the power of the Dinan or the others, but will be part of the BMW warranty (yes, Dinan covers their stuff, but only at Dinan dealers I believe). The BMW one keeps under one org.

Doug, are you referring the M performance package with 15 hp and 30 ft-lb torque? I test drove the standard 2013 X5 35i and one with M performance package, right after. The difference was subtle at best, not worth the $1600. If you know of a different BMW tune with more power, please let me know. I would be very interested. I'm considering the Dinan stage 2 tune, but very concerned, even with the Dinan warranty. I can see BMW and Dinan trying to blame each other when a drive train component fails, even under warranty. And what happens if you get BMW extended warranty and something goes wrong with the drive train. Would BMW cover a Dinan tuned X5?

Dinan also covers their stuff as well - for the length of the BMW warranty. You just have to go to a Dinan certified BMW dealer (or to Dinan). I think they do everything in their power to avoid finger pointing, but still, I would always feel more comfortable with a full BMW only tune (although that comfort would come at the cost of power )

Thanks Doug. I barely felt a difference between the M performance package and standard X5. Not worth the $1600 IMO. Why does BMW have to be so stingy with power? I would get the M performance if I got another 30 hp and 60 ft-lb of torque. At least you could probably feel a substantial difference with that kind of increase. And you won't be getting into the V8 territory so BMW don't have to worry about 50i sales.

You can push your dealership for a 5-10% discount on the Dinan install. I got the discount as I'm waiting for the upgrade for the 2013 software

Tahoe, the salesman let me gun both X5s on the on-ramp of the freeway. The tach went to 6000 rpm. I see your point about break in, but I don't think it would be significantly more apparent after several thousand miles. As previous post pointed out, it's only 5% increase in hp and 10% in torque. Pretty weak for $1600. You're paying mostly for the BMW warranty which isn't saying much for such minimal increase in power.

I went with Dinan Stage 1 and now am upgrading to Dinan Stage 2 this week. Will let you know how it goes but the stage 1 definitely made a difference from the OEM vehicle. No problems what so ever. More later when I get my car back.

Just got the car back and OMG. It is a beast. Not an X6M but closer to the X6 5.0 in terms of performance and exhaust now sounds deeper and more sportier. More soon when I get my pics developed and have time for a proper right up. But it is more than quick with the Dinan Stage 2 tune (380hp/416 torque)..I scared myself twice on the 1.5 hrs back from the dealer tonight! LOL

Big difference with the 2010 X6 though, since it uses the N54. The N55 stage 2 tune from Dinan doesn't advertise the same numbers that the N54 one has, be interesting to see if someone has driven them both and how different they feel.

By the way, just wanted to add that I'm about 1 year into the car with the tune. The only hiccup I've had in that time is one I'm not sure was tied to the tune or not. On a trip to Tahoe, I ran the car pretty low on gas and suddenly the car started running choppy and a CEL popped up. Long story short, I had a failed low pressure fuel pump (already had done the HPFP recall). BMW replaced under warranty so no big deal, but the timing of it just happened to be about a week after the stage 2 installation. Probably not related, but just thought it might be worth mentioning. |

As I also had an Eisenmann Race Exhaust done so I am getting used to that as well. Definitely gives the car...ah cajones! LOL Review and pics to be posted soon.

Yes limited market for the X6 35idrive out there compared to tons of stuff for the X6m and X6 5.0. But my Eisennman and Dinan tunes are well worth it IMHO especially since I already had Stage 1 on my car. Am moving to your area next month (Seattle-Tacoma) so will enjoy my X6 drive out there a little more now I think!
