RFTs to Continental DWS06 and Alignment
I was hoping my Bridgestone RFTs were going to last a few more months, but the front's were getting a bit too worn. So, I decided to get ready for the winter sooner than I thought and got the Continental DWS06 All seasons after reading some rave reviews. Now, I only have a few miles with these bad boys but the X5M is a COMPLETELY different car. The reduction in road noise alone was worth it for me as my wife and toddler are usually the ones in the car.
I had a few hundred dollar gift cards from Pep Boys so I got the tires, installation, and alignment from there. My question to the group, and I am NOT versed in alignments, but the car seems to drive straight however the steering wheel is turned noticeably to the left. It was not like this before. Is this a bad alignment that can be fixed or am I stuck with this? Thanks in advance for the input. |

I can't speak to the alignment question, but I am VERY interested to hear how the tires are working for you. I'm in the exact same boat waiting for my Bridgestones to crap out - they've still got some meat on them but the road noise seems to increase every day. My plan is to switch to regular tires and buy a spare kit when they go, and the DWS06s are square on my list of alternatives.
I'm especially interested in your perception of the sidewall. I had DWS' on a previous car and they rode well but were soft in the turns. Supposedly the 06s are better in that regard, but you're the first person I've heard of with that tire. Please keep us posted. Thanks!

I put the DWS06's about 3 weeks ago and they are awesome, no noise softer ride. Only complaint is that they tend to roll a bit in cornering, not as stiff. Living in NYC where I'm not sure where my tax dollars go because they sure as heck don't go to fixing the pot holes everyehere, i have the tires at 38 psi front and 42 psi rear to stiffen them up and protect the rims. So far love them, gas milage has gone up due to the drop in weight.
As far as the allignment goes had mine done by a shop in Jersey that a lot of Bimmer guys go to. I also feel my steering wheel is cocked a bit to the right though, I almost wrote it off to the crest in the road but I may go back to the shop for them to look at it. I'll try and post the before and after allignment read out from 3 weeks ago. |

Damn, that was the same problem with the old DWS'. Others have suggested going with the DWs and keeping a winter set, and I've got one of those, but I've been hoping to get a little more garage storage and dump the winter set.

I decided to go with the Toyo Proxes STII on my 20" 214 style rims. I love them. The tread pattern looks sick and the ride is awesome. No road noise what so ever after about 5k miles on them. They are advertised as all season so I will have to wait and see how they do in the snow this winter. I did not go with the Conti's because of the side wall complaints, with the Toyo's I have no issue with soft sidewalls they take turns just like the RFT Bridgestone's. I still can't believe BMW uses the Bridgestone run flats as OEM tire.

Re: the Proxes, I soured on Toyo after trying the Proxes 4 Plus on my M5. Absolutely hated them. However, when searching for tire options I ran across the STII at treaddepot and was wondering. Thanks for the info!

Congrats on the new tires. Looking forward to your review after some miles
Sounds like an alignment issue. I too ordered a set of the DWS06s and they are currently on their way to the installer. I'm thinking now that I should have gotten the DWs instead of the DWS06s as I have a winter wheel/tire set at home. Any opinions? Sorry... Last edited by BAKZOOM; 08-27-2015 at 01:11 PM.. |

Find out if your car has active steering? If it does, follow the BMW set up procedure for an alignment.
Then: - max toe front: +/- 0.02 - max toe rear: +/- 0.02 - camber value rear: in center and symmetrical (same left and rear). That's it. Show us your current alignment results.

Am I the only one that doesn't think the Bridgestones are that bad? I also think the tread pattern looks much better than the Continental DWS06s.

I think my only complaint with them is the noise and weight. I needed some new ones anyway so decided to go with DWS06s. |

Mine had 18" BS Dueler RFTs that came from factory. I remember being unpleasantly surprised how much hydroplaning occurs, especially for such a heavy vehicle, on new tires. Lots of rain in Seattle, so hydroplaning is a constant concern. Not a single instance of hydroplaning with Continental DWS. |

I called the shop. They got them in but said it takes 3 hours to put them on. So, most likely next week for me to get the install done...maybe Sunday.

Although I buy my tires at an independent tire store, my tire alignments are done by a BMW dealer. Dealers are more expensive; but, the alignment is just too important for tire life for me to risk doing otherwise.
My suggestion would be to try and get your money back. Failing that, chalk it up to experience and head for a BMW dealer. I have Conti DWS on my X5 and like them very much. |
