Crazy story, but in short I wanted to fix because I really love the truck and the options list is too strong for insurance to have totalled it and try to raise my premiums. Ended up being a wonderful father son project and I will have memories, knowledge, and experience for years to come because of it. Currently sitting at 105,700 miles. Lots of life left! I parked at work after running out for lunch, and my odo read 231000. Just next week, I'm towing 2200 miles in a long weekend to make it to a drift event. Wohoo! many many miles, I figure by the end of September I'll be at 235k at the very least. Getting down to the last minute before the trip, Hoping to get the drift car back on the ground today, and then tomorrow will start the X5's trans, guibo, and center support bearing job. I might hold off on the guibo and CSB before the long trip, but it just depends on when things get finished.

I know I’m kind of double posting... but tomorrow is my last day of prep for my big trip. My x5 is a deleted, tuned, 35d it’s sitting currently with 231,500 miles on it I believe. It’s going to tow my drift car, about 6000 lbs of loaded trailer behind it, 1100 miles to Detroit, then shawano, WI, for a weekend of drifting. Then, I’ll load it all back up, and head home. I’m excited and SO nervous at the same time. My bmw mechanic friend can’t believe I would drive so far, towing, with a bmw that has 231k miles on it... but I don’t hesitate to drive it 150 miles a day, so that’s the real difference? I’m going to be keeping an eye on trans temps and coolant temps, I’ll be in D most of the time, where the trans doesn’t hesitate to downshift while going uphill to lug less, and I’m going to hope for the best!

I made an account just to reply to your post as I will also be at USair this weekend with my Steel Blue 2000 328I. Thought it was super random to stumble upon your post, especially since people don't really use forums anymore. I, unfortunately, will not be towing my E46 there with my X5 as I just purchased it Monday and do not have a trailer hitch on it yet. But I'll see you there! I'll have to check your X5 and E46 out! |

Well... I had to cut her loose. I had a white 2010 X5M with just about 121,000 miles on it. Started to have intermittent issues with the transmission for about 1.5 yrs. I would get the dreaded transmission malfunction error any time I was cruising on the highway and had to step on the accelerator to pass a slower car, usually when the car downshifted from 6th gear to 5th gear. As time went by the issues got worse as this would happen more frequently and at other gears as well. Every time, the issue would go away when I restarted the car. I took it into a reliable independent BMW shop and they confirmed what I suspected... it woudl need a new transmission. They were willing to rebuild the transmission for $6k, while cheaper than the BMW dealer it was still a lot to spend for an aging car with most likely more issues on the horizon.

I will add, when the issue was first noticed at around 85k mile mark, I took the car to the BMW dealer where I normally had service done regularly and had built a strong relationship with (probably because I spent so much money and time there). They were not able to diagnose the issue even after a few attempts. They kept reassuring me that the e70 transmissions were rock solid and that I should just keep driving and enjoying the car. Unfortunately it wasn’t until after the issues were recurring more frequently where they and the independent shop said the transmission needed to be replaced. Silly me for trusting the bmw dealer. I was actually contemplating selling the X5m at the 85k mile mark and I had a solid offer from a private party to buy the car at$30k. But the dealer convinced me that there was nothing wrong with the transmission so decided to hold onto it. |

Majority of their profits and cash flow comes from service and repairs. Old BMWs are a cash cow for them, they will love you to hold on to the out of warranty BMWs. |

Mine just hit 105k miles, but I had a new motor put in at 92k miles. How do you like your BMS stage 1 tune? I was looking at a tune and was thinking about the BPC tune.

I have an X5M- with 110 / always beyond maintained/ OCD me - 5 k oil changes Lubri Molly- BEST OIL - or Amsoil - Worst case Redline . - always Mos2 - 2 cans - and 1 bottle of prolong , truck is pushing about S63 engine- 760 at crank so about 580-600 to wheels - lubriMolly only high end stuff - so far 🤞🏻- Nothing! No issues but then again I have KWV3 fully adj suspension,CF lip that is a functioning ram air for my intakes / Akrapovic DP back titanium exh / Turner module + 85 hp and 110tq - the car has all recalls - and is tight as a drum I'm very hard on car - I'm about to do a diff and tranny service also- next is the stage 2 pure turbos ! - A lot of people don't understand that with proper maintenance and as long as you take care of your vehicle they will take care of you Miles don't make a difference on any sort of vehicle as long as maintenance is performed. I have built a stage III Audi S4 - when we pulled the heads off you could still see the crosshatching in the cylinders which is amazing. and stage III Bmws all with over 100 some odd thousand miles just take care of your car and don't drive it like grandma you have to take it up to at least 150 once in a while for an extended period of time to get the shit out. I'm a 27 yr German car mech - ASE master tech also in Body work so i fully understand cars with encyclopedic knowledge.

I’m at 115k. 2010 X6M. I’m on my third battery, which is now AGM. The original Alternator is starting to show spotty, intermittent operation. Guys, do not get a remanufactured Alternator. You will be doing again, in one year. The Chinese component refurbishment processes use the absolute lowest-grade parts... all in the name of lowering costs. Buy new, and you buy for the next 100k. The reman units are a complete scam.
