That's correct. I got the 35i. I actually was looking again at the 50i; but between the new car being upside-down and the problems with the 50 engine, I thought to stay pat and look into a Dinan tune or something similar.

I don't think the 35i is a slouch even stock. If you look at the numbers, it will walk away from some of the quicker SUV's of even 5 years ago. They have more go fast parts for them to. I like V8s and the 50i is the biggest HP I wanted to afford, so it won my monthly payment

I bought a brand new 50i in 2012, even paid cash for it, but then a year and a half later had an incredible investment opportunity on a rental property so I sold the X5. Ever since I just really missed having an SUV in the stable. So, I found a sweetheart deal on a 35i a couple months ago and voila I'm back in the E70 community and couldn't be happier.
I do miss the massive power of the 50i, but 35i is adequate for my needs. And I have a couple other V8 thoroughbreds in the barn for when I have an urge to satisfy my power fix. |

I actually paid cash for my X5 as well, but I didn't buy it new. Its really a good idea not to borrow money on cars if your situation allows.
I have a 2008 X5 4.8i with every feature (adapative drive, active seats, etc.). Very nice car, but I found its towing power lacking. I have a 22" travel trailer, and have to keep the car in 3-5th depending if I'm on a hill. Can't run in 6th. So I found the power lacking, and fuel economy (7-8mpg) I'm trading for a 2011 X5M with 40K miles to solve my power problem. I'd rather have a diesel for its economy, but owning a 335D yeah, I'd rather not have a diesel cause their unreliable. haha, I think the X5M is more reliable for towing. I also figure becasue of the significant improvement of low rpm torque vs the 4.8i I should be able to tow in 6th gear and get better fuel economy. Believe it or not more powerful engines often have bettere towing fuel economy (friend gets 10-11mpg with his X5M) |

The X5 is not enough truck for that load. If your paying cash for your X's, you need to have the X, then have yourself a pickup (or 8 lug SUV ala Suburban 2500/Ford Excursion), it doesn't even have to be a diesel , think Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, take your pick. Even a 1500 from those afromentioned 3, or the Japanese, Toyota, and Nissan would be a solid choice. A 22' trailer with a car I assume is in the 8-10,000 lbs range, and IMO you should have yourself two vehicles, because unless you come back and inform me the load is 'only' 5-6,000 lbs, you don't have enough truck for that load. You don't know my backstory so you may doubt what I am telling you, but I have owned many "HD" trucks over there years, and also having towed many "HD" worthy loads over the years. I also have for the past many years, been a class 8 and lower truck technician, and currently run a heavy equipment shop, for a fleet rated in top 10 in the country last year.

How do you enjoy the 50? Does it live up to your expectations for a fast SUV?

My neighbor had an 08 48i but now has the F15 35i which she enjoys more so. I think due to the new look, features and etc. towing isn't in her mindset at all I'm sure

Yes. Though I think a lot of the speed is masked by the high quality chassis and suspension. Those who have had previous BMW's may not understand what I mean, but those who have owned or currently own select American cars understand what I mean. I will grab some dyno numbers and quarter time for this truck car thing at some point.

I bought my BMW because we had already had 1 (a 2011 335i Msport) and we knew we had to get a more practical vehicle. We decided to get our 2013 35d because it handled great for it's size, was pretty quick, and had tons of space.

I got my 35D because I was looking for a diesel vehicle. I looked at the ML but Benz just does not seem to keep up with Bimmer Diesels. Better economy and cost is what lead me to the Bimmer. I have driven the vehicle over over 50K miles in the last 2 years and it is a beast.

Paying cash for a brand new car is actually the opposite of what you want to do from a financial standpoint. Let's look at it from a few standpoints:
1) You'll take a depreciation hit soon after driving off the lot. In my opinion, buy a low mileage CPO and you'll get nearly all the benefits of having a new/newer car for 20-40% less. 2) Financing rates on new cars is usually so low, the amount you pay for that loan only accounts for a very small percentage of what you paid for the vehicle 3) Instead of using the cash towards an investment that will give you a return, you've locked your cash into a negative returning asset. We all know that a vehicle is not an investment so from a financial standpoint why not mitigate your loss. Take half of a $60k purchase and put it into a conservative growth investment earning 8%. Not only will you cover all those taxes and fees from the initial purchase, but you'll also cover the interest charges of the loan for the entire duration of the terms. But more importantly, you now have a lump sum of cash sitting in an investment earning a return offsetting your expenses. Extrapolate that lump sum over a longer period of time and the benefits clearly out weigh the paying cash for new tractic. If anything, let those more fortunate than you pay the full price of a vehicle and take the loss. Pickup a low mileage CPO and put more into an investment to give up a vehicle with a little more miles. |

THIS guy is right! Listen to him! That's why I paid CASH for a 3 year old X5 50i. It had already depreciated a bunch, I got more car than I could afford new, and I paid no interest.
