Finally installed my LED headlights
Finally, with all of the information in hand and long weekend ahead, yesterday at 5:00 am in the morning I decided it was the right time to put my LED headlight in on my 2011 X6M. Something I have been planning to do for almost six months now. What a difference in looks, brightness, performance and overall appearance it makes. Finished by 6:00 pm. If anyone wants to attempt this or has any questions regarding the retrofit (or wants to buy my old lights ) feel free to ask. I will be glad to share every bit of my experience. By the way, local BMW dealership refused to do it - too complicated of a job for them

For LED tail lights, its a simple unplug old, remove, install new and plug them back. Should not take more than 1 hour for all four pieces. Fender lights are held in place by three nuts each (inside of a trunk). Trunk lid lights are held in by one nut each, to access it you will have to remove two small access doors located within trunk lid trim. No coding required. I also changes my license plate lights to LED. Those had to be coded to remove warm and cold checks (FRM3 module). Real project begins when you decide to replace your headlights. That's when it gets a bit tricky and times consuming. I will be more than happy to assist with any questions or coding issues since I have just finished it all

Congrats it is not an easy job for sure!
My retrofit was installed by the local dealer, I think I made a great deal, paid retail price with installation included. I'm still thinking in retrofitting the rear lights, but not decided yet....

Original BMW LED headlights with both control modules should run between $900 - $1300 US$, harness approx $100, new FRM3 module approx. $300. If you source it all from BMW dealership, expect to pay more. There is very minimal coding that's required for this retrofit. Mainly remove two items from VO, add LED lights to VO and then re-code FRM, KOMBI and CAS modules with new VO. Coding is the least difficult part of this retrofit.

I wanted to let my local BMW dealership perform this retrofit, they refused to do it. Told me they do not have enough technical knowledge to get it done. Apparently this retrofit is not available in USA, only Europe from what I understand. Basically, what BMW dealership told me is that BMW of NA will not support them with this retrofit and provide any technical information in case something does not go 100% during the installation / coding. Therefore, I attempted to do it myself and glad that I did. Saved close to $1K by doing it myself, gained great experience and spent all day outside, working on my X6M (which is much more enjoyable that letting dealership perform the operation )

No cutting or modification required. As long as you use original BMW wire harness and original BMW LED headlights, it is all plug-n-play. Just take your time and double-check every connection while doing this to avoid having to take it all apart again to figure out why something is not working correctly. Like I mentioned, for me it was one full day; however, all worked 100% from the start, no issues at any point of retrofit. If you are planning to do this one, feel free to PM me for any questions

Apparently Xenon projectors are no longer the rage...LED headlights are now the latest, fashionable high end upgrade for BMW. They do not use Xenon projectors in LED headlights at all; LED emitters are used instead.

This looks sick! Great job on the retrofit! Could you share where you purchased the LED headlights and exactly how much you paid for them please? =) I was looking into purchasing LEDs to upgrade the halogen angel eyes on my 2012 X6 but this looks muchhhhh sexxxxier! If it was a perfect fit on your 2011 X6M then it should fit on 2012 X6 50i right? |
