A quick update to my post from Aug. 22nd. My dealer agreed to repaint the fenders and rocker panels but I will have to pay for the 3M protective film. You can buy the film fairly cheap online, (precut for you specific trim) and apply it yourself. Getting it done by a "specialist" gets expensive quickly.

Been reading a bunch of posts regarding the wheel arch on the X5M.
Found a local 3M certified vendor near me. Got my rocker panels and wheel arch films for $200 (uninstalled of course). Installed one side of my wheel arch yesterday after watching a few Youtube videos. Not that hard to install. Just need some patience. |

I have a 2012 X5 with M-Sport. Opened a case with BMWUSA about a year ago. I was being somewhat optimistic and hoping for a recall or a bulletin. Didn't happen. Called BMWUSA again early this week and the local market representative with BMWUSA met me at the dealership. Took about a dozen pics and verified no hardware changes, such as wider tires, wheels and spacers. I did not. They stated that this was not a defect but a design flaw. He made this point several times and offered to "goodwill and respray the fender flares and the rockers on both side. Now the issue appears to be the time it will take to remove, respray and apply the film. Could take as much as a month and dealer is giving some push-back on a loaner. That said, I'm just glad it's being taken care of. I would have rather been offered new rockers and fender flares.

WOW. That is worse than I had expected. I wonder why some (like my 2011 w/ 45K miles) is not affected, but yours would be. Can we only blame your local roads, or did something happen to some X5s when the fenders weren't sprayed properly? I notice ZERO damage to the actual door panel, furthering my theory.

Do you have the M-Sport, as those fenders are much wider. I've also noticed the 2013 fenders appears to be slightly narrower and most I see are black plastic as oppose to body color. Could just be coincidence. Could be the roads, as the highway funds were first to be cut to balance the state budget in NC The car has 23k miles and I first noticed it about a year go (12k) and opened a case with BMWUSA. BMW has agreed to respray the rocker and the flares as "goodwill".
