Switched to Contis, now need a Space Saver spare!
Just changed the tires on my X5 2011 X35D Sport from the original Dunlop runflats to Continentals Extreme Contact, a direct recommendation from my local BMW service rep. Could not be happier, the road noise of the Dunlops was extreme loud and the ride very stiff. We have a lot of speed bumps in my town, and it was like torture going over them with the run flats. I am still driving fairly aggressively with the Contis and did not find them to be in any way inferior to handling speeds in excess of 100 mph, and now at 90mph I can actually have a conversation with someone versus the awful roadnoise of the runflats. i think the sport package and the Contis is a very good combination.
I am looking for a Space Saver spare. In case anyone has one available, please let me know! |

I just had the parts guy order all the pieces and parts. Plus I had them do the tire mounting and install, totaled ~ $400 but it was easy and done.
You'll need the tire, the rim, the different storage box, and jack kit.

If you got the DWS continentals, your fine. No need for run flats or a spare. Probably get 60k out of them as long as you rotate them.

I forgot to mention I have the 20 inch rims, and the rear tire is a 315 and the front tire is a 265, so different aspect ratios mean you can't rotate front-to-back. At most, you could rotate them from L to R and R to L, which i suppose reverses the direction of the thread and minimizes some uneveness, but that is about it. The Conti thread pattern seems to be directional from what I see though. Right about now, wishing I had the 19 inch sport rims :-)
The DWS are made out of synthetic rubber, so I think they can be punctured !!! I believve the inside goop will damage the TPMS sensors, but these ran about $80 in my previous car. maybe that is the best compromise. |

You have to dismount and swap side to keep same rotation direction on the Contis. This will help if your camber is a little off and you are getting a little higher tread wear on sides. A little more air pressure can help with this as well. If the tires are wearing even all the way across the tread, don't worry about it.
Also, all modern light passenger and truck tires have synthetic rubber. About 50-60 percent. Without it, they would be HORRIBLE in the rain as natural rubber is very hard and doesn't provide as good of grip. Race tires have higher composition natural rubber. A can o fix a flat would me a smart option. If you are concerned about TPMS issues, get an actual M mobility kit. Basically their version of fix a flat along with an air pump that plugs into your 12v. I would imagine BMW would warranty any TPMS issue if their kit was used, but you should inquire with them first. |
