The 335d has less hp but more torque, then the 335i. Performance wise the 335i has a slight edge on the 335d, but the numbers are very close. 335i hp 300, torque 300 ft/lb, 335d 265 hp, torque 425 ft/lb. Don't quote me these specs are from memory.

This thread has been discussed at length before here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...9#post11513709

Here was my original response (as I have a 335i and had the opportunity to drive a 335d for approximately 1000 miles)

"I have a 335i but have had the chance to drive the 335d for about 1000 miles when my car was being fixed due to dealer misrepresentation (long story I'll spare you the detail on). In my experience I'd say it really depends on what you are looking for.

If you are the type of driver that loves to jump off the line, but not go excessively fast on the highway, I'd have to recommend the 335d. If, however, you do like to go faster than the average driver on the highway I'd have the recommend the 335i. When I drove the 335d on the highway I had the luxury of having my radar detector with me (escort 9500ix) and I have to give the edge to the 335i over speeds of 80 mph.

In terms of pure back road enjoyment on the weekends, my personal opinion is that the cars are pretty close; it really comes down to the driver and how 'spirited' you like to drive.

All and all, it really depends on your driving style and what you are looking for. If you want Biggest bang for your buck in short sprints off the traffic light, take the 335d. If you want more top end power, I personally fel that the 335i has more of it (but I must admit I am biased because I have a 335i).

Hope this helps, either 335 you choose will be a fantastic choice you won't regret!"

Good luck!

Took my d to the track. Surprised how well it held up. Pulls great out of corners and uphill (passed an m3 . A tad anemic on the back stretch.

Go for the 335d.

Performance-wise, they're WAY too close to give up on 10+ additional mpg on cheaper fuel.

It depends on where you live... Here in S FL diesel is usually the same price or higher than premium gas.

Btw I've had my 335d for about 9 months and with the JBD box for about 5 months and I absolutely love it.

The 335d also only revs to 5000, whereas the 335i will rev to 7000. I prefer high-rpm, peak-power cars, but that's just me.

There is a difference in the power curve, but it's just a matter of knowing how to drive your car (just like every other car). You definitely wouldn't want to be redlining a d because that's not where your power is, but honestly, that's half the fun. I came from an RX8 which redlines at 9000...loved it. I now drive the d which I rarely (if ever) shift past 4150...love it.

Performance wise the two are very close in stock form, and both are great cars.

I opted for the d For several reasons, but not the least of which were
1. Mpg of a Camry hybrid
2. Handling/speed of the 335i.
3. Reliability of the 328.
4. I get everyone to look at me funny when I fill up with diesel (and I work in the "green industry" so it's a good talking point about not sacrificing performance for efficiency)

The downside to the d (as I see it)..
1. Not as much tuning support as with the I (assuming you're a tuner and you're in the US)
Note: it is VERY easy ($300 easy) to reliably get 305hp and 425 lb/ft to the wheels, but it gets tough after that. Realistically though, (assuming 15% drivetrain loss) 360hp and 500lb/ft at the crank is more than you'll ever need unless you're really hardcore about it.
2. Oil change will be just a touch more expensive due to the DEF, but it is Easily counter-acted by not having to buy spark plugs or a new HPFP.
3. If you prefer a manual transmission or a coupe, neither is an option (in the US).
4. It May be slightly higher-priced than a 335i depending on your purchasing market.

Well if you want a manual only the 335i will do.

If you can absorb the higher price and less of them out there (Aftermarket purposes) I would say diesel all the way. (This coming from a 335i owner). If I could have made the 335d work I would have.

Just want to make sure I'm clear on what was said, the 335d engine can't be modified to increase hp as much as it can be done on the 335i.
I see several 335d for sale, with no noticible differnce in price.

Correct. As of yet the numbers posted above are about the most you'll get with what is currently available for the US market d's.

with time I can see upgraded intercoolers available as well possibly being able to eliminate the restrictive emission components and methanol injection systems.
With those modifications I wouldn't doubt the d could make 400+whp 600+ft lbs.

Sure it can but because of the fewer numbers out there it seems that the N54 has the lions share of aftermarket available at this time but as DSB said. With time and new upgrades coming out, his estimates are totally possible.

If price is no issue in your area that's great. Unfortunately in my neck of the woods a 335d was 5-6k more than the 335i and that put it out of my price range.

There are a few bench flashes that get around 330hp/490lbft at the wheels, with no other mods. Here's one from a member here:

Right now Diesel is 10% LESS than Regular gas up here in Alberta Canada. I'm shocked how cheap it is.

Premium in Chicagoland is over $4.60 everywhere, and getting close to $5 some places. $4.79 seems about the norm. Most places have diesel at $3.99, with a couple outliers at $4.29.

Combine Premium costing on average 20% more than diesel with the drastically better mileage yet awesome power, and I'm quite happy with the d.
