Reading a stored CEL?

My daughter was borrowing my 2012 X5 for a few weeks, she returned it and said once she got an engine malfunction warning. The car ran fine, and after the restart the warning never appeared again.

I have a Carly adaptor and subscription, but I am having trouble with it and I am going to cancel my subscription. Is there any other way to read the stored code?

I ditched carly a few years back. It was fairly useless for me. Protools is what most folks in the diesel community seem to be using. I have no personal experience with it, but it is made by bimmergeeks. The folks who put out INPA/Standard tools years and years ago.

For reference, I am currently using ISTA for the heavy lifting and Torque Pro to monitor the basics on long trips or when towing.

I have a cheap Lenovo Andriod tablet that I use with Bimmergeeks Protools app and their OBDII Pro K+DCAN Cable. Will allow you do scan CEL's, do maintenance stuff like battery matching, etc. and allow you to recode modules to customize the vehicle to how you want it.

I took a look at Carly but realized that it was garbage. And I absolutely despise paid memberships.

I got a Foxwell nt530. It reads and clears codes. Costs about USD $160 and fits nicely in the glove box. It's a good inexpensive tool for a couple reasons. First, I take a pic of any codes and then erase them. If they keep coming back then I know there is a problem to address and I can tell my shop the code that I keep getting. Second, sometimes the x5 will throw a code that appears more random and the Foxwell will clear it for it to never return. That way I don't have to go to the shop for a code that ended up being nothing. Third, I went through a few X5's over the years trying to find the right one. I traded in the sold ones and made sure all codes were cleared before the trade-in date because the dealers will also read the codes (I watched them do this) before accepting the trade. And I didn't want some random code being used by the dealer as leverage to negatively affect trade-in value. And last, just in case I get a code that causes limp mode, the Foxwell can clear those up so the x5 drives normally in the meantime that I can get to the shop.

Another recommendation for Protools. I bought their Bluetooth OBDII to go with it. Does most of the things you need, although ISTA/INPA is the way to go if you really want to go next level.
