BMW OEM rear mount bike carrier pics
I've been looking for a bike rack solution for my X6 for a while now and after pricing numerous different solutions, I finally stumbled across the BMW OEM rear mount bike carrier. The was after looking at roof racks, both OEM and aftermarket (Thule and Yakima), hitch-based solutions, and portable rear mount carriers.
Price-wise, it's MSRP around $650 or so, but on Amazon I found a dealer selling it for $570, with shipping total was around $600. No tax charged either. The upshot is this solution is about the middle of the pack for price. The portable carriers were cheapest at around $400, and the rest of the options were into the $1000 and up range. As you can see from the pics, this is a nicely integrated solution that plugs right into the tow hitch eyes (how many of you knew these actually existed?), which are covered by a small removable plastic panel. Installation or removal can be done with one person and take about 5 minutes. The rack can tilt even if bikes are loaded so you can open and access the trunk. It's also expandable to carry a third bike. The big negative is that the straps holding the bikes are just nylon, so I wouldn't leave the bikes unattended, or look into other security solutions. Obviously, this rack can't do anything for you if you also want to carry snow equipment or cargo boxes, but if you just want to carry bikes, I'd definitely recommend considering it. Also works for X5. |

Thanks for the pic. I actually picked one up today, however, was disappointed at the nylon straps. Did any of you come up with a solution to make it more secure?
Also does it fold towards the rear door. I see that the long piece folds down, but how about folding it up? |

Looks great. I'm concerned that there is little clearance between the metal bike rack and the paint job of the car. Does the rack wiggle or move with the bumps in the road? Do you see this being a potential issue? (See picture 7 of original post)

There's a flexible steel sheet embedded inside the nylon straps.
I've been using for many years on my X5 and now X6. You can load it with 2 bikes and travel like 100mph with no issue. |

You can see my review is there too. By the way, I just picked up a 2014 X6M. I kept the rack when I sold my X6, but I haven't tested it yet on the M. I'll let you know if I have any problems with it, but I'm pretty sure it will be fine. |

For free ride and downhill mtn bikes this, IMHO, is the best rack in existence:

As much as I really need a true receiver hitch.... I simply cannot give up the rear diffuser of the X6M.

I have one for sale for anyone living in the DC area (Annandale, VA). The same one the OP wrote about. Used twice. Stored in the shed for years. Paid $650. Will let go for $350.

Great rack, for Road and Cyclocross bikes. Newer MTB hub widths may be tricky to store both together, as the spacing tolerances is hella tight. I just ended-up storing the second bike inside the X6M, while the other rode solo on the rack itself.
Handled a 140mph pull like nothing...

OEM rear mount bike carrier
I no longer own my X6 but kept the OEM bike rack. Willing to sell for $350 and split shipping charges from New Mexico to your location. If interested, please write me back via email. Thanks, Walter

I bought this for a 2011 X6 5.0. Traded in the car but kept the bike carrier. I had the keys but unable to find them. Will keep searching. Otherwise, it's in good shape. I'm in NM. Where are you located?

When I bought my X6M I had the dealer install a factory hitch so I could put our mountain bikes on it. I have an older Thule hitch mount rack and it's awesome. It'll fit 4 bikes with the 2 bike extension. No issues after a couple years of using it.
