I wonder what is the purpose of the rear resonator that sits in between the two outlet flow pipes? Won't the two outer pipes act as direct output flow units, unless there is a diverter in that 90-degree section that would then make the resonator functional?

If the exhaust valve is open, it is pretty much straight piped... If the valve is closed, it diverts the exhaust through the resonator.
