Yup, it is definitely the valve stem seals. It is happening with my E70 4.8 X5 (2007) too. It is definitely burning coolant.

I've had the problem at around 80k miles (3 years ago), as expected. But instead of replacing it, I've decided to drive the car until the engine breaks because the car isn't worth that much anymore.

The car is at 108k miles right now, and its still running fine, though I don't drive it on road trips anymore.

As for the oil consumption part, it really depends on how you drive the car. When I pamper the car, I normally refill 1 quart every 1,200 miles. But when I redline it often, it can drop to 600-800 miles.

If you've owned your X5 since the beginning like me, then I think you should just drive it til the car dies and get another one, perhaps an X5m (used). These cars, especially the 4.8, are worth nothing nowadays.
