Check your crankcase ventilation hoses. I had white smoke coming out of my exhaust when idling or stop and go traffic. Bmw told me i needed valve seals to be replaced and i said hell no. Went to a indy german shop specialist and said i needed crankcase ventilation hoses to be replaced and thats whats causing oil consumption plus white smoke from exhaust. my 2011 x5 50i has 70,000 miles with no extended warranty but luckily my crankcase ventilation hoses under warranty for 10 years or 120,000 miles on my vehicle. Went back to the stealership and insisted to replace the crankcase ventilation hoses since part index is the old version. They took the car for 5 days and replaced 4 fuel injectors in the second bank and replaced the crankcase ventilation hoses and voila the white smoke stopped coming from exhaust and my oil consumption decreased dramatically. Now i add 1 quart of oil every 1800 miles instead of 950 miles intervals. Check and see if your ventilation hoses are covered even if you dont have warranty the parts were extended on certain vehicles. I hope this can solve your issue.
