I think the non-turbo V8 is a great engine. The 3.5 X6 is also a good engine.
It depends on what you really want.
X6 - Sport, car like ride
X5 - SUV, luxury truck
Both are great choices. Performance wise, I think the 300 HP 3.5 is actually about 340 HP according to tests. BMW under rates the engine's capabilities so not to compete to close with the M. So it will be close to the V8 without the V8 growl.
You can't go wrong with either one. It comes down to styling, room, and your preference.
I would not buy either one based on iDrive. iDrive is constantly changing and there is something new every year or two. So buy the car you want and ignore the feature stuff or you will be waiting forever.
