Only curled a few times in my life, but it's definitely harder than it looks (and easy to lose your balance on the ice) ...
So what you're saying is that curling and alcohol don't mix?

I figured sweeping melted the ice, actually increasing friction between the stone and the surface. But sometimes they sweep to move/curl the rock, and sometimes they seem to be doing the same perpendicular to the rock's motion, to slow it down
