BTW, if you tilt your head one way or the other you can see the HUD. Not ideal but it works.

I am a big Maui Jim fan and I had to switch to cheaper RayBans just for driving, so I feel you. I wish I remember the details, but there was a discussion about how the HUD works and basically the angle of the windshied contributes to the effectiveness of the projection. Vertical scanning wouldn't work because of how the light bounces towards the driver.
