Navi in early X5 models?

I'm about to buy an early model X5, 2001, 2 or 3 probably. I'd really like to have navigation, but I'm wondering what the navi is like on those. I have had navi in two cars plus my Garmin portable. I loved the navi in the '06 MDX, hated it in the '04 Grand Cherokee and have mixed feelings about the Garmin, which is what I use now. I'd rather have an in dash navi if it worked decently. Can anyone tell me what it is like? Does it work while you're driving? Is it multiple colors or two tone? Does it show traffic? Most importantly, is it intuitive and easy to use?

I notice on the two 2001's I'm looking at, the screen is to the right of the dash. On a 2003 model I saw, the screen was a bit bigger and centered. Not sure if there are other differences in how it actually works or anything.

Thanks for any input.
