You may not need any coding, wiring, or modifications to retrofit paddle shifters. If you have 5V across pins 4 and 6 of the X01003 connector on the steering column, your X5 is wired for paddle shifters.

My understanding is that there are two different flavors of paddle shifters, and you will need to get a wheel with the correct shifters. My wheel came from a 2013 X6. I believe it is BMW part number 32306797911.
