I feel for you on that... I can rationalize having fancy European cars as I do most of the little stuff, which justifies taking it in for the big stuff. Maybe look at it that way... if you do enough of your own oil changes and brake jobs, you can justify taking it in for a differential rebuild.

The HUGE issue in addition to the cost is finding someone competent that wants to do the work and has the skills and mindset to do it. Dealers and many indys just want to throw parts at it. Smaller shops lack the coding experience/ability to do that. Neither may particularly care about your 12 year old car that you love.
