Yup. I've been to many M schools, including multiple at the Ring. Actually, I'm off to Sweden this tonight for the Ice Driving! When seriously pushed over and over...the M cars are just that much different. Particularly, the cooling and the structural differences add up. The latter is especially critical given how heavy these things are getting.

The only models that come close are the stripper low-end coupes - think 128, 135 and 228/30 models with sport suspension and seats and nothing else. What they lack in power they make up for in lack of heft. They aren't M feeling, but they are still a total blast.
