Hell let #5 play #4 as a wild card round to see who moves on to play #1 for all I care. There's going to be a problem with any system, and the more teams you start to let in, the more average the resumes get.

Regardless, it's going to be 4 teams through 2026, so the tears will just keep on flowing.
I completely agree that 4 team is just the right number. Even as an Ohio State fan who's gotten the benefit twice and slighted once from being the 4th team.

Take care of business, play the right schedule, look good doing it, and you're in. No more excuses. Back in the BCS days, for some years, you were only allowed to slip once! At least the CFP format theoretically could allow you slip only once AND still play in the CFP. That's an improvement, evidenced by a 1-loss 4th seed winning it TWICE, and 1 and 2 seeds getting blown out.

Any more slots and you indeed are looking at participation awards. Just look at the travesty of the NCCA basketball tournament. Went from 64 for the longest time to 65, and then to 68...then rumors of 96 or 128 teams.

There are only 12 regular season games. Make them actually count for something instead of the NFL system. Lose a non-divisional game?... ho-hum, as long as we win 9...that's when you get guys taking week 17 off. There will ALWAYS be complainers for the team left out. You can have a 50-team playoff system and I guarantee you when Notre Dame finishes in 51st spot, they'll complain.

Frankly, I think the inconsistency of the committee is just fine, IMO. It makes for great tv and discussions and makes all this fun. And College Football Championships has ALWAYS been a beauty contest. If you want a formulaic approach, then that's the BCS right there. A known formula. Frankly, I'm okay with the BCS again, but with a 4 team playoff approach. The key issue with the BCS was the wide ranging differences of the polls and balancing and weighing each poll/ranking system.
