Seems par for the course for Italian vehicles. While it's not a car, I have a Ducati. If the maintenance scares you with the Alfa, having a Ducati would terrify you. I just had the 15,000 mile service done on my 848 and it cost me around $1500. And because Ducati doesn't have a full up parts warehouse here, unless a dealer happens to have the part in their inventory, the part has to be shipped over by boat.

And there are various quirks of owning an Italian designed vehicle. My 848 developed a condensation issue within the headlight assembly. The fix from Ducati was to have my dealer drill small holes in the rear cover/cap. And then there's the infamous plastic fuel tank debacle.
