The 40 in 5w-40 has to do with how well the oil performs when hot. 5w is the ambient temp rating and is just fine for cool winter days in Cali. 5w-40 is the way to go.
Edit: saw your other post and looks like I chimed in late. Next change I'd say go with 5w-40.
