I think it should be illegal for a plainclothes officer in an unmarked car to pull for traffic stops. There is no way to tell if he is real.

Well, there are reasons why that occurs, but it is not SOP. They aren’t usually doing traffic stops on “
normal people”. Most times they are Detectives and working cases. Usually they have marked vehicles perform the stops.
