Temp sensor or thermostat ?

2014 X6M 42k miles

Wife said it started strange and then had the engine malfunction light on. Drove a mile down the street, went to a store, restarted with no issues or lights…drove normal for 2 weeks..
Yesterday (of course after I do a really good wash) it did a long start, engine malfunction light. Shut it off, plugged in and it’s showing a p128 code (not reaching running temp) cleared the code, started normal and no cel again yet. Going to let run in driveway and spin around the block..expecting the p128 to come back…any way to tell if it’s one of the coolant temp sensors or the thermostat it self ? Going to keep an eye on the temp gauge. The P3Cars digital performance vent gauge was showing coolant temp at 212.
Will report back later but assuming It’s going to end up at the dealer this week unfortunately
